BREAKING OF THE FAST

Author’s Note:

All Praise is due to Allah Azzawajall Whose Value and Worth can never be described even by the greatest orators of all times.  Whose Innumerable Blessings and Bounties cannot be enumerated even by the greatest of evaluators of all ages and homage due to Him can never, ever be sufficiently and competently paid even by the most assiduous and the diligent.

I testify and declare that there is no deity but Allah and he has no co-sharer.  I further testify that Muhummed (Sallallaahu Alaihi wa Aalihi wa Sallam) is the Servant of Allah, and the last of His Prophets and on whom He entrusted His noble and illustrious religion, with His recorded commandments, with His revealed and described Book, the Holy Quran and with specific and clear commands and interdictions so that people may take warnings, admonitions and instructions from the verses of this most Noble, Gracious and Glorious Holy Quran.

By the Grace and Mercy of Allah Azzawajall I did Three years of research, on this subject, from 1995 to 1998 before I presented this as a lecture to my students in the Ramadhan of 1998 (01st Ramadhan 1419 - 20th December 1998).

I have spoken to many an 'ulama and I have explained to them in detail regarding the Time for the Breaking of the Fast and the time of Maghrib prayers. They never disagreed with me, they accepted all the references I had quoted and the explanations of the great Mufassiroon  - but  - believe me they have not done anything about it.

I even went on the air – giving a summary of this talk for Three consecutive years in the Month of Ramadhan on the Sahar Programme organized by the Sri Lanka Broadcasting Corporation.  I do not know how many had listened to it or even put it to practice.

So I decided to publish this in the form of a booklet and urge you, with all sincerity, that you as my brothers and sisters should not find your most valuable ‘Amal going waste at the end of the day.  I most sincerely and earnestly request you to read the information presented in this booklet very carefully and try to digest each and every information that I have given you, with reasoning and understanding.

The information presented here, is after having done extensive research into this subject. You will note that the references are from the Holy Quran and the noble authentic hadithes  - please refer them and  see for yourselves; analyze them and remember the plots  and deceptions that the Zionists and the hostile Nasaara are indulging against Islam and the Muslims – They are in fact hell-bent on even destroying our most precious, and  valuable - fasting.

A word of caution  -  with this knowledge in hand, do not create any unpleasantness with the people around you.  Do not confront them  - Do not tell them bluntly that they are wrong  - but use kindness, with wisdom, strategy and beautiful preaching, and make them slowly read these references that I am giving you, and let it dawn on them automatically that the injunctions in the Holy Quran and Sunnah of Rasoolullahi (S.A.W.) are far different from what we think and what we do.

I dedicate this book to the Muslim Ummah

May Allah in His Mercy Guide us all along the right path.  The Path of those on whom He has bestowed His favours, and protect us all from the path of those who have incurred His Wrath or gone astray.

Aameen.

Introduction

The subject that is being dealt with is : “The Breaking of the Fast”

Before we go into the subject proper, I would like to present to you practical instances with regard to the plots, connivances and devious scheming against Islam and Muslims together with some guidance and warnings both from the Holy Quran and the Holy Authentic Hadithes for us to be aware and to be alert with regard to such enmity against Islam and the Muslims.

The Quranic warning:

Verily, they are Plotting a scheme (against you) – Surah Tariq 86 : 15

And the Quranic advise:

يَا أيُّهَا الّذِيْنَ ءآمَنُوْا خُذُوْا حِذَرَكُمْ

‘O You who Believe, Take your precautions . . . . . ’  (Surah Nisaa – 4: 71)

and again in verse 102

‘. . . . And take all precautions against them. . . . ’ (4:102)

The word حِذَرَ has many meanings:  – Be cautious, Be wary of, Be on one’s guard against, Be alert, Watch out, take care, take heed and many other similar synonyms

So you can see the Holy Quran instructing us to be alert and to be cautious.

From the inception of Islam, It is the Zionists and the hostile Nasaara who have always been plotting and scheming against every aspect of Islam.  They use all their resources and energy in every way possible using devious schemes and subtle ways to injure us physically, materially and most of all spiritually.

One of their main plots is to feed us some portion of the hog, which is prohibited in Islam.  You will always see, that whatever Allah and His Rasool made it Haraam, they have made it a glamour – so we give you something to think, reflect, ponder and meditate.

The Sugar Industry used bone-black for refining sugar.  Chemically bone black is the black, carbonaceous substance into which bones are converted by calcination in close vessels; - called also animal charcoal (usually called Bone Char). It is used as a decolorizing material in filtering syrups, extracts, etc.

Bone Grist is the raw material for Bone Charcoal. Bone Charcoal is used for refining sugar syrup.

Bone char, made from the bones of cows, is at times used to whiten sugar. Some sugar companies use it in filters to decolorize their sugar. Other types of filters involve granular carbon or an ion exchange system rather than bone char.

In the 1950's they plotted and planned that the bone charcoal that should be used should be the hog bone. – the bones of the pig.   The enemies of Islam are aware that if the Muslims get used to eating the pig, their supplications (Dua’s) will not be accepted.

It is laudable that The 'Ulama at that time were alert to this turn of events and even though, the communication systems were so very limited, they did their utmost to counter this threat and spread the message so fast, that Muslims the world-over stopped using refined sugar or white or brown sugar.  Subsequently, the West had to face unimaginable losses on their sale of refined sugar.

Once they knew that the Muslims were aware of their plot, they changed their stance and started using other forms of chemicals to refine sugar.

Then they stepped into another area – The Health Sector.

‘Cellulose’ derived from plant was used in the manufacture of medicinal capsules.  Preference was publicized for capsules rather than tablets; and capsules became the mainstay in respect of important drugs for pathological treatment of most of the ailments.

The Zionists and the Nasaara, slowly did away with the cellulose capsules and switched over to Gelatine – and they made sure that they manufactured Gelatine from the skin and bones of the pig which were and are still slaughtered by the millions in the European and other Western, Eastern and Far-Eastern states. By which means they were able to keep their expenses low and their profits high.

To have mass production of Gelatine, they had to open factories all over the world and in places where they were unable to obtain pigs, they were forced to substitute the bones and hides of other cattle.

The medicinal capsules became so very popular, that they could not meet the world’s demand and so they resorted to bovine Gelatine and subsequently they even initiated the manufacture of synthetic Gelatine.

But their hatred for Islam was so much - that they did not want the Muslims of the world to consume anything that is clean.  Since the Muslims consider anything of the pig to be unclean, they wanted to see that the Muslims were really forced to consume unclean things  - in any way possible - What better way is there other than incorporating this unclean animal into important medicines and drugs ! –

So, under the guise of improving the quality of Gelatine,  and since they cannot supply the required large quantities of pig Gelatine, they plotted to add small quantities of pig Gelatine, which they themselves shipped to these factories from their homeland where there are enough and more pigs.

It should be noted this scheming and conniving against Islam and the Muslims did not stop only at Medicines and Pharmaceuticals.  The era of Supermarkets, tinned foods and long shelf lives of food items became a reality.

Now they had to use preservatives and emulsifiers for these tinned and packeted food, whether it be canned beef, or sardines or canned fruits and vegetables, chocolates, biscuits, bread and other confectionary, even milk, which needed a longer shelf-life. Then they started adding small quantities of hog based components to these emulsifiers, stabilizers, preservatives and colourings.

Somehow or other the pig component was added to anything and everything, polluting and contaminating every consumer food item.  (At the end of this paper, I will give you the list of the Haraam Emulsifier Codes for your reference, as well as suspected codes which may contain pig fat.)

Moreover, when they began their military expeditions, their main aim and target were the Muslims of the world. wherever they were able to establish colonial rule  - they targeted Madrasas, the Muslim seat of learning. with the help of hypocrites in the community.

They used the help of certain types of so -called Scholars - who were vying for name, fame, power and position,  - these ‘scholars’ who were respected by the Muslim communities in their countries were willing to utilize this trust to serve their colonial masters.  They were given a free hand to indulge in their passion and lust and desire to their hearts content.  All this day did for their selfish and personal advantage.

They sold Islam for the miserable price of this world.

They were able infiltrate into Islamic seats of learning - and introduced – a different phase of Islam,  just plain  - ritualistic Islam,  - a dead Islam,  - a passive Islam without any force or recognizable force - An Unintelligent Islam.

Not satisfied with that, they further created dissension, with the help of these hypocrites in the community - to create rifts and strife and fights even in this ritualistic Islam, which they themselves had created – Islam with various hues were the result of this conspiracy..   Each hue is now at each others throats.  And our community - the Muslims - have not only swallowed - the proverbial hook, line and sinker they have swallowed even the rod.

Today - the only recognized powerful ritual - which no Muslim disputes, is Prayer and fasting.  They have even infiltrated and dipped their filthy tentacles into this most Holy ritual and managed to create dissensions and sects.  Not only divisions, they also made certain that this fasting does not become beneficial to the Muslims.  They contrived and connived and introduced many innovations and the worst maneuver and design was to see that one who fasts does not derive the full benefits of such fasting  - and that too  - at the end of the day.   That is how they manipulated in a very subtle way and somehow or other, convinced the Muslim Ummah through the intervention of the hypocritical scholars that Sunset is the time of Maghrib prayer.

What our Holy Prophet Muhummed (SAW) said 1400 years ago came to pass – This Hadith is quoted in Sahih Muslim – Hadeeth No. 213

“Hasten on with good works before calamities befall you like the darkness of the night.  When a man will wake up a believer in the morning and an unbeliever in the evening and a believer in the evening will become an unbeliever at morn. (This is the time) When he will sell his religion for the miserable price of this world.” - (Reported by Abu Hurairah)

BREAKING OF THE FAST

This Hadith is Narrated by Sahl bin Sa’ad ; He says that Allah’s Apostle (SAW) said that “the people will remain in prosperity (the people will remain on the right path) as long as they hasten the breaking of the fast.”  (Sahih Bukhari Vol.3. Hadith No. 178 – Hadith Serial No. 1957)

Muslims are all too familiar with this well-known hadith, regarding the breaking of the fast - And Muslims the world over have construed the fact that no sooner you hear the Adhaan – The Call for Prayer for Maghrib – you should rush to break your fast.

This hadith is very very authentic and this Sunnah must be obeyed, no doubt -  But, ponder over this a little and ask yourself  -  Is the official Sunset the time for the call for Maghrib Prayer?

You will note the various broadcasting stations and the TV stations announcing the Adhaans at various times - Are these the times that we have to rush to break our most cherished fast - Are we going to waste and destroy that Fast which we had fasted the whole day with such painstaking devoutness and piety? –

The majority of the people are being programmed in taking the Sunset Time announced by the Meteorological Department, as the time for the announcement of the Maghrib Prayer -

I would like to state emphatically, that this is NOT the Sunnah of the Prophet [SAW] –

The Astronomical definitions of Sunrise and Sunset proves this very effectively

Sunrise - Is defined as the instant in the morning under ideal meteorological conditions, with standard refraction of the sun's rays, when the upper edge of the sun's disk is coincident with an ideal horizon.

Sunset - Is defined as the instant in the evening under ideal meteorological conditions, with standard refraction of the sun's rays, when the upper edge of the sun's disk is coincident with an ideal horizon.

In other words, Sunrise is defined as the instant when the leading edge of the Sun's disk becomes visible on the horizon, whereas sunset is the instant when the trailing edge of the disk disappears below the horizon. These are the moments of first and last direct sunlight. At these times the center of the disk is below the horizon.

Furthermore, atmospheric refraction causes the Sun's disk to appear higher in the sky than it would if the Earth had no atmosphere. Thus, in the morning the upper edge of the disk is visible for several minutes before the geometric edge of the disk reaches the horizon. Similarly, in the evening the upper edge of the disk disappears several minutes after the geometric disk has passed below the horizon.

Twilight

For a time before sunrise and after sunset, light from the Sun illuminates the atmosphere to produce some skylight, known as twilight. Twilight is arbitrarily divided into three increments. The period when the Sun is 6 degrees or less below the horizon is called civil twilight . The time of the end of civil twilight is often published in newspapers along with the time of sunrise and sunset. When the Sun is between six and twelve degrees below the horizon, the period is called nautical twilight. During this period it is dark enough to see the brighter stars, used for navigation, and still light enough to see the horizon. When the Sun is between twelve and eighteen degrees below the horizon, the period is called astronomical twilight.

The times of these 3 kinds of twilight may vary slightly, at various times of the year.

In tropical countries like Sri lanka it is observed that the Civil Twilight begins approximately 21 minutes before Sunrise and it sets approximately 21 minutes after Sunset.

The Nautical Twilight begins approximately 37 minutes before sunrise and sets approximately 46 minutes after sunset.

For computational purposes, civil twilight begins before sunrise and ends after sunset when the geometric zenith distance of the center of the Sun is 96 degrees (morning) - 6 degrees (evening) below a horizontal plane. The corresponding solar zenith distances for nautical and astronomical twilight are 102 and 108 degrees, respectively. That is, at the dark limit of nautical twilight, the center of the Sun is geometrically 12 degrees below a horizontal plane; and at the dark limit of astronomical twilight, the center of the Sun is geometrically 18 degrees below a horizontal plane.

This information is derived from the Explanatory Supplement to the Astronomical Almanac, ed. P. K. Seidelmann (1992), pp 482ff.

In simple terminology, the Beginning of morning civil twilight is defined as the instant in the morning, when the centre of the sun is at a depression angle of six degrees (6°) below an ideal horizon. At this time in the absence of moonlight, artificial lighting or adverse atmospheric conditions, the illumination is such that large objects may be seen but no detail is discernible. The brightest stars and planets can be seen and for navigation purposes at sea, the sea horizon is clearly defined.

And the Ending of evening civil twilight is defined as the instant in the evening, when the centre of the sun is at a depression angle of six degrees (6°) below an ideal horizon. At this time in the absence of moonlight, artificial lighting or adverse atmospheric conditions, the illumination is such that large objects may be seen but no detail is discernible (For your information, this is one of the descriptions given by our Holy Prophet (SAW) as a sign for the Fasting man to break to his fast). The brightest stars and planets can be seen and for navigation purposes at sea, the sea horizon is clearly defined.

Accuracy of rise/set computations.

Scientists say that, The times of rise and set phenomena cannot be precisely computed, because, in practice, the actual times depend on unpredictable atmospheric conditions that affect the amount of refraction at the horizon. Thus, even under ideal conditions (e.g., a clear sky at sea) the times computed for rise or set may be in error by a minute or more. Local topography (e.g., mountains on the horizon) and the height of the observer can affect the times of rise or set even more. It is not practical to attempt to include such effects in routine rise/set computations.

The accuracy of rise and set computations decreases at high latitudes. There, small variations in atmospheric refraction can change the time of rise or set by many minutes, since the Sun and Moon intersect the horizon at a very shallow angle. For the same reason, at high latitudes, the effects of observer height and local topography are magnified and can substantially change the times of the phenomena actually observed, or even whether the phenomena are observed to occur at all.

Clouds also make it again difficult to judge exact sunset time

It is, therefore, very clear indeed that the rise and set of the sun cannot be accurately computed.

The sunset time that is given by the Meteorological Department is approximate, and therefore cannot be the time for Maghrib Prayers as will be seen in the Authentic Hadithes and the relevant Quranic Verses.

Let us look into the Quran and Hadith and establish the correct time of the Maghrib Prayer. The - Sunnah of the Prophet [SAW]

Firstly, let us take some trouble and look into the Sunnah of Rasoolullaah [SAW] with regard to the establishment of times for the calling of the prayer.

Please note this very, very carefully:

In all prayer calendars or even in slips and hand-bills that are distributed during the period of Ramadhan  - you will find a column "Sunset" and that very same column is marked as time of "Maghrib Prayer"  -

The Time of Sunset that is marked is given by the Meteorological Department.

Is this the time of Maghrib prayer?

When the Adhaan or Call for Maghrib prayers is made, please take a look at the sky.  On a clear day you will all see that the sky is blue, the yellow light is still in the sky, the yellows rays of the sun are still visible as yellow patches on the walls of your homes or wherever the rays strike  - you can see the yellow rays streaming through  - is this the time for Maghrib Prayers?

Did The Apostle of Allah,  Rasoolullahi (S.A.W.) tell us that Sunset time as given by the Meteorological Deparment, is the time for Maghrib prayer?  -

The Holy Quran Says:

إنَّ الصّلوة َ كَانَتْ عَلَى الْمُؤْمِنِيْنَ كِتابًا مَّوْقُوْتًا●

Verily, the prayer is enjoined on the believers at fixed hours (at Stated Times).  (Al-Quran - Surah Al-Nisaa - 4 : 103)

The Holy Quran further points to us the various times of prayer:

وَ أقِم ِ الصّلوة َ طَرَفَي ِ النَّهَارِ  وَزُلّفًا الّيْل ِ ●

And establish regular prayers at the two ends of the day and in some hours of the night: (Al-Quran  Surah Hud – 11: 114)

Tafsir Qurthubi refers to

(Tharfaan)  meaning Two extremities of the  Day. [ طرف  also has synonyms : حدّ and  منتهى (Haddha and Munthahaa ) – Meaning: Limit, Border, Edge and Terminal point.] and they refer to  الظهر and   العصر  (Zuhr and Asar    And

(Zulafan Minal-Lail) refers to the Two approaches of the night -   والعشاء  المغربMaghrib, and ‘Ishaa.

Rasoolullaahi (SAW) said:

That Subh is the first extreme of the day and Zuhr and Asar is the other extreme

The time between Noon – one extremity; and Sunset – the other extremity

And Maghrib and Isha are the first Extreme and the second extremes respectively of the Nightزلفا الليل (Zulafan Al-lail)

Zulfah – Means the beginning of the night or a part of the night.

The Holy Quran again states in Surah Qaaf:

فَاصْبرْ عَلَى مَا يَقُوْلُوْنَ وَسَبّح بِحَمْدِ رَبّكَ قَبْلَ طُلُوْع ِ الشَّمْس وَقَبْلَ الْغُرُوْبِ●

(Al-Quran : Surah Qaaf – 50 : 39)

50.39. Bear then with patience all that they say and celebrate the praises of thy Lord before the rising of the sun and before (its) setting.

Hadith:

This Hadith is narrated by Jarir ibn Abdullah al-Bajali :

We were sitting with the Prophet and he looked at the moon on the night of the full-moon and said, "You people will see your Lord as you see this full moon, and you will have no trouble in seeing Him, so if you can avoid missing (through sleep or business, etc.) a prayer before sunrise (Fajr) and a prayer before sunset (Asr) you must do so."

(Sahih Bukhari Vol.9. Hadith No.529, Muslim Hadith No.7078 - Tirmidhi:Hadith No. 5647) – [TAFSIR QURTH.UBI, THAFSEER IBN KATHEER]

Holy Quran again refers to :  Surah – Taha – 20:130

Therefore (O Muhammad), bear with what they say, and celebrate the praises of thy Lord before the rising of the sun and before its setting.

And glorify Him some hours of the night and at the two ends of the day, that thou may find acceptance.  (Al-Quran – Surah Taha – 20 : 130)

This verse specifically refers to the dawn prayer,  the two afternoon prayers – Zuhr and ‘Asar, and the two night prayers, Maghrib and Ishaa.

Let us now take a look at this Hadith:

'Abdullah ibn 'Amr reported that the Messenger of Allah, upon whom be peace, said, "The time of the Zuhr prayer is when the sun passes the meridian and a man's shadow is the same length as his height. It lasts until the time of the Asar prayer.

The time of the Asar prayer remains so long as the sun does not become yellow (during its setting).

The time of the Maghrib prayer remains so long as the red hue does not disappear*. The time of the night prayer remains upto the middle of the night.

And the time of the morning prayer is from the appearance of the dawn till the sun does not rise.

When the sun rises, abstain from praying, as it rises between the horns of Satan." (Related by Muslim.Hadith No. 1275 )

* Our Main concern here is the time of Maghrib Prayer.  Hence this statement in the Hadith :

:  ووقْتُ صلوةِ المغر ِبِ مالم يَغِب ِالشّفَقُ

The time of the Maghrib prayer remains so long as the red hue does not disappear –  Mufassiroon unanimous in their opinion that Maghrib Prayer Commences at the Appearance of the Red Rays of the Sun until it disappears.

The Lexicon meaning of شّفَقُ (Shafaq) is :

The twilight afterglow after the Sunset

Hadith :

Sunan of Abu-Dawood – Hadith No. 393      Narrated by Abdullah Ibn Abbas

The Apostle of Allah (peace be upon him) said: Gabriel (peace be upon him) led me in prayer twice at the House (i.e. the Ka'bah). He prayed the Zuhr prayer with me when the sun had passed the meridian to the extent of the thong of a sandal; he prayed the ‘Asr prayer with me when the shadow of everything was as long as itself; he prayed the Maghrib Prayer with me when one who is fasting breaks the fast; he prayed the night prayer with me when the twilight had ended; and he prayed the dawn prayer with me when food and drink become forbidden to one who is keeping the fast.  On the following day he prayed the noon prayer with me when his shadow was as long as himself; he prayed the afternoon prayer with me when his shadow was twice as long as himself; he prayed the Maghrib Prayer at the time when one who is fasting breaks the fast; he prayed the night prayer with me when about the third of the night had passed; and he prayed the dawn prayer with me when there was a fair amount of light.  Then turning to me he said: Muhammad, this is the time observed by the prophets before you, and the time is anywhere between two times.

There are innumerable Hadith reported in all the Sihha Siththa – I have chosen only one such Hadith so as to shorten the length of this book as well as for easy reading without burdening the reader with repetitions of the same hadith.  However, I shall give you a couple of ready References of these Hadithes are : Sahih Muslim – Hadith No. 1278, 1280, Sahih Bukhari – various references  as well as in Fiqhhus-Sunnah 1.82

In all these hadithes, you will see one statement in common – That is:

وَ صَلَّى الْمَغْر ِبَ قَبْلَ أنْ يَغِيْبَ الشَّفَقُ

He (Rasoolullaah) prayed the Maghrib Prayer before the red rays of the sun disappeared.

Meaning – that the Maghrib Prayer commences at the arrival of the red rays of the sun and ends at its disappearance.

17.78: Establish thou the prayer from the declination of the sun to the darkening of the night, and the Recitation at the dawn; verily for the prayer and reading in the morning carry their testimony.

PROHIBITED TIMES OF PRAYER.

Ibn 'Umar reported that the Messenger of Allah (SAW)) said: none of you shall choose to pray at the rising of the sun nor at its setting. (Sahih Bukhari Hadith Serial No.  585 or Hadith Vol.1. Hadith No. 559)
