Surah Al-Qaari’ah – Chapter 101 – Lesson No.10.

الْقَارِعَةُ ¤ مَا الْقَارِعَةُ ¤ وَمَا أَدْرَاكَ مَا الْقَارِعَةُ ¤ يَوْمَ يَكُونُ النَّاسُ كَالْفَرَاشِ الْمَبْثُوثِ¤ وَتَكُونُ الْجِبَالُ كَالْعِهْنِ الْمَنفُوشِ ¤ فَأَمَّا مَن ثَقُلَتْ مَوَازِينُهُ ¤ فَهُوَ فِي عِيشَةٍ رَّاضِيَةٍ ¤ وَأَمَّا مَنْ خَفَّتْ مَوَازِينُهُ ¤ فَأُمُّهُ هَاوِيَةٌ ¤ وَمَا أَدْرَاكَ مَا هِيَهْ ¤ نَارٌ حَامِيَةٌ ¤

In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful.
1 The calamity! The Great Disaster
2 What is the calamity? What is the Great Disaster
3 And what will make thee know how terrible is the calamity?
4 The day wherein men will be as scattered moths,
5 And the mountains will be as carded wool.
6 Then as for him whose measure (of good deeds) is heavy,
7 He will live a pleasant life.
8 And as for him whose measure (of good deeds) is light,
9 The abyss is a mother to him.
10 And what will make thee know what that is?
11 A burning Fire.

السّلام عليكم ورحمة الله وبركاته

From this lesson onwards we will be doing a word by word exegesis of Surah Al-Qariah, Insha Allah.  Before we commence the exegesis, let us recapitulate – summarize briefly what we have been discussing during the past few weeks.

We Started off Surah Al-Qariah, by giving an introduction to it and touched on its revelation, the period of revelation, and the various Hadithes and references relating to this revelation and we gave a general indication of the meaning of Surah Al-Qariah, – the Day of noise and clamour – the day of the great disaster, when the whole of the present order of things will be overthrown with a tremendous convulsion and it will be a stunning experience. We also touched on the various Quranic ayaths and the various Hadithes proving our contention in this context.  We touched on the scientific explanations with regard to the origin of creation – the occurrence of the Big Bang which was not an ordinary explosion in an already existing space, but in fact – space itself was created by the Big Bang.  We touched on Newton’s Laws of motion, Hamilton’s Equations, Maxwell’s Equation, Einstein’s Theory of General Relativity, Dirac’s Equations and Schrodingers Equation where we able to analyze time – past, present and future, we analyzed in detail the scientific theories with regard to uncertainties of Quantum Mechanics and we came to the conclusion – scientifically, that the entire space-time must be indeed be definite and there can be no uncertain future.

By these analyses, we were able to determine time symmetries – Equations of time evolution where some of them involved in time asymmetries, our belief in the distinction between the past and future and we did what was known as the Laws of Thermodynamics.  We did Galileos Laws of Dynamics, Newton’s Laws of motion, Newton’s inverse square Laws of gravitation, and the Law of conservation of energy and Newton’s Laws of Conservation of Angular Momentum and Newton’s Laws of Mechanics.  WE also touched upon the time reversibility of these Laws and we gave you various experiments and various illustrations Scientific Equations and all of them, perfectly substantiated by references from the Holy Quran and the Hadith of Prophet (S).  We touched on Quantum Physics, Quantum Mechanics Low Entropy and High Entropy – where the entire universe, inspite of its Big Bang Started off in Low Entropy form. we also explained to you how the sun emits energy in the form of visible light photons – a higher frequency and higher energy and Low Entropy and the energy being re radiated in the form of infra-red photons, and in High Entropy form. By explaining and analysing Planck’s Radiation Law in combination with Einsteins Theory of Relativity we proved that the energy coming into the earth balances that leaving it.

We gave you various references from the Quran  regarding the balance of His creations.  where everything is in balance – أَلا تَطْغَوْا فِي الْمِيزَانِ -   وَالسَّمَاءَ رَفَعَهَا وَوَضَعَ الْمِيزَانَ

55.7 & 8 And the Firmament has He raised high, and He has set up the Balance (of Justice),

In order that ye may not transgress (due) balance.

where Allah has raised the heavens in balance and when man upsets the balance by his injustices, then comes the nemesis (Divine Retribution).  We explained to you that the formation of the universe was due to the formation of primordial gas – hydrogen.  We see in the Quran, that everything is made from water – the word used was Maa un – it should also be noted that the word for hydrogen is Maa’een - it could also be interpreted as that everything was created from hydrogen – We also explained the word Meezan also means gravity.  If not for the gravity, and the Thermo Nuclear Reactions the sun would not have been kept from getting too hot and ultimately dying out.

In the last stages of the universe – as you know the universe is continually expanding and

huge amounts of invisible matter or dark matter spread throughout the space, could result in the universe being positively curved and finally collapse into a Big Crunch.  this re-collapse have been explained in detail – We explained that the sun has been in existence for some 5,000 million years and in another 5 – 6 thousand million years the sun will begin to swell outwards  and then it will become a type of Star called the “Red Giant”.  – many many “Red Giant”s have been observed in the universe by telescopes.  at the centre of the “Red Giant” is a core which is called the White Dwarf Star, whose material is concentrated to extremely high density  – and if a ping pong ball is filled with this matter, it will weigh several hundred tonnes.  now this core will gather material from the main body and the “Red Giant” will be completely consumed by the White Dwarf and in a few million years it will obtain total obscurity as an invisible Black Dwarf.  Now,  once this centre core passes the weight of the Chandrasekhar’s limit which is 1.4 times the Solar Mass, the core will collapse catastrophically inwards and a stupendous explosion occurs and the Star becomes a Supernova – this still continues to increase in mass while collapsing turning into a Neutron Star when the mass is around 2.5 times the Solar Mass.  Now when this Solar Mass Starts increasing to 10 solar and 100 Solar Mass – the result of the collapse will be Black Hole – Even light travelling at 186000 miles per second cannot pass through a Black Hole.  anything entering the Black Hole, will be alright for a few seconds and suddenly in quick succession, the body will be torn to shreds, disintegrating into its atoms and their nuclei – We also proved that a larger Black Hole, swallows a smaller black and when the entire universe into one gigantic Black Hole, the final Big Crunch would wreak its ultimate havoc. We proved all these by Quranic verses, and various Hadithes.

Only now, with this scientific background that you will be able to understand the real meaning of  Surah Al-Qaari’ah.

Now for the Exegesis. – Here we will give you the meanings of the individual word, their synonyms and their variations together with their derivatives:

Verses One, Two and Three .       -    وَمَا أَدْرَاكَ مَا الْقَارِعَةُ ¤   الْقَارِعَةُ ¤ مَا الْقَارِعَةُ ¤

الْقَارِعَةُ – The Great Disaster, The Terrible Calamity, The Stunning Blow, The Clatterer, The Striker

The Synonym is :  يَوْمُ القِيَامَة   - Meaning – Day of Resurrection – Judgment Day

قَارِعَةُ الطَّارِيْق   – means Middle of the Road,  Road-bed, Road-way, Pavement.

The Root word is – قَرَعْ – قَرْع  - Meaning – Knock (ing), Rap (ping), Bang(ing), Beat(ing) –

قَرَعَ الجَرَسَ -  Hit, Percussion, Ring Sound.

– قَرَعَ الطَّبْل To Beat, To Drum – Roll – Percuss

– قَرَعَ : دَقَّ – طَرَقَ – خَبَطَ To Beat, To Strike – Hit

– قَرَعَ فُلاَنًا – ضَرْبَ Knock, Rap, Bang, Beat,

– قَرْعَة : دَقَّة – خَبْطَة Toll, Stroke.

– قَرْعَة : مَرَضٌ جِلْدِيٌّ مُغْدٍFavus : Fungal Skin Disease (Scalp)

– قَدِعَ – صَلِعَBald.

-: دَقَّ – طَرَقَ – خَبَطَ To Hammer, Percuss, To Pound, To Grind, Crush, Bruise, Bray, – Pulverize, Reduce to innumerable particles, Comminute, Pestle, Triturate (Grind to Powder)

– دَقَّ القَلْب – خَفَقَThrob Palpitate, Pulsate, Agitation.

– طَرَقَ : طَرْقَ – طَرقةTo Strike, To Forge, To Batter, To Pound, To Ram

– طَرَقَ: أتَى لَيْلاًTo Come by Night

– طَرُوْقِMalleable, Ductile, Melted

- دَقَّ Fine Dust, Smallness, Minuteness

– دِقّة – إحْكَام – ضَبْطِAccuracy, Precision, Exactness, Exactitude, Definitude, Correction, Perfection, Finesse

إفْرَاطٌ فِى طَرْقِيْق  – صُعُوْبَةٌ قِى الإرْضَاءِ

Strictness, Attentiveness to Detail, Scrupulousness, Meticulousness, Particularity, Seriousness, Gravity, Complicatedness, Accurately, Precisely,

Exactly, Minutely.

The Next word    أدْرَاكَ –   and its synonyms are :

Distinction  – تمِيْز        Understanding, Comprehension فَهْم  -

Knowledge, Perception, Conceptionمَعْرِفَة  -

Awareness, Vision, Foresight  بَصِيْرَة -

Reason, Intelligence. عَقل  -

Generally أدْرَاكَ Means:

Perception, Discernment, Realization, Notice-Seeing, Recognition, Apprehension, Comprehension, Grasping, Understanding, Conception, Awareness, Consciousness, Cognizance, Cognition, Knowledge, Reason, Intelligence, Intellect, Mind, Mentality.

Maturity Adulthood – Full Age  -  إدْرَاكَ , بُلُوْغْ , مُرَاهَقَة , سِنُّ الرُّشْدا

Extra-sensory Perception. -    إدْرَاكَ وَرَاءَ الْحِسَّيّ

إدْرَاكَ الزّ َاتِ الْإسْتِبْطَانِي      -    إدْرَاكَ شُعُوْرِيْ

A Perception – Introspective (Viewing into the mind) Self-consciousness, Mind perception of itself, as a conscious Agent.

The Word  أدْرَاكَ   - Comes in 13 Aayaaths of the Holy Quran:

69:3, 74:27, 77:14, 82: 17 & 18,  83:8, 83:19, 86:9, 90:12, 97:2, 101:3, 101:10, 104:5

¤ وَمَا أَدْرَاكَ مَا الْحَاقَّةُ ¤ مَا الْحَاقَّةُ   ¤ الْحَاقَّةُ

69.1 – 2 The Sure Reality! What is the Sure Reality?

69.3 – And what will make thee realize(Understand, Comprehend) what the Sure Reality is?

74.27 وَمَا أَدْرَاكَ مَا سَقَرُ

And what will explain to thee what Hell-Fire is?

77.14 وَمَا أَدْرَاكَ مَا يَوْمُ الْفَصْلِ

And what will explain to thee what is the Day of Sorting out?

82.17 وَمَا أَدْرَاكَ مَا يَوْمُ الدِّينِ

And what will explain to thee what the Day of Judgment is?

82.18 ثُمَّ مَا أَدْرَاكَ مَا يَوْمُ الدِّينِ

Again, what will explain to thee what the Day of Judgment is?

83.7 كَلا إِنَّ كِتَابَ الْفُجَّارِ لَفِي سِجِّينٍ

Nay! Surely the record of the wicked is (preserved) in Sijjin.

83.8 وَمَا أَدْرَاكَ مَا سِجِّينٌ

And what will explain to thee what Sijjin is?

83.18 كَلا إِنَّ كِتَابَ الأبْرَارِ لَفِي عِلِّيِّينَ

Nay, verily the record of the Righteous is (preserved) in ‘Illiyin.

83.19 وَمَا أَدْرَاكَ مَا عِلِّيُّونَ

And what will explain to thee what ‘Illiyun is?

86.9 يَوْمَ تُبْلَى السَّرَائِرُ

The Day that (all) things secret will be tested,

90.12 وَمَا أَدْرَاكَ مَا الْعَقَبَةُ

And what will explain to thee the path that is steep?-

97.2 وَمَا أَدْرَاكَ مَا لَيْلَةُ الْقَدْرِ

And what will explain to thee what the night of power is?

101.3 وَمَا أَدْرَاكَ مَا الْقَارِعَةُ

And what will explain to thee what the (Day) of Noise and Clamour is?

101.9 فَأُمُّهُ هَاوِيَةٌ

Will have his home in a (bottomless) Pit (Abyss, Chasm).

101.10 وَمَا أَدْرَاكَ مَا هِيَهْ

And what will explain to thee what this is?

101.11 نَارٌ حَامِيَةٌ

(It is) a Fire Blazing fiercely! – It is a Blazing Inferno

وَمَا أَدْرَاكَ مَا الْحُطَمَةُ

And what will explain to thee That which Breaks to Pieces?(Shatters to smithereens)

Ironically the word Huthamah – حُطَّامُ الُّنْيَا  – Means Vanities and Transient things of the world.

The Question posed by the usage of the phrase  – وَمَا أَدْرَاك -  What will explain to you, what do you understand by, what do you realize by – Shows it is beyond your perception, discernment and realization.  These things Like the Day of Judgment, Blazing Inferno, bottomless pit, Night of Power, that which shatters to smithereens, The record of the Righteous, The record of the Wicked.  You can never even comprehend – they are all beyond your intelligence, intellect, reason, cognizance and conscience.

What a wealth of meaning that this word وَمَا أَدْرَاكَ gives.

So the Meaning of the First Three verses which contain mainly two words -

الْقَارِعَةُ  and  وَمَا أَدْرَاكَ  will be

وَمَا أَدْرَاكَ مَا الْقَارِعَةُ ¤   الْقَارِعَةُ ¤ مَا الْقَارِعَةُ ¤

It is the day of Great Calamity, Great disaster and great misfortune.  This great calamity will hit you with a deafening sound.  It will come with a bang – it will hammer you, grind you, grind everything in its wake to a fine dust.  It will pulverize, comminute, triturate, and grind everything to a fine powder.

The Striker, The Clatterer, The Noise and Clamour, The Calamity will Throb, Palpitate, Pulsate.  It will pound you and batter you and everything else.  It will melt and make everything malleable and ductile and this disaster, the calamity, the misfortune, will come by night.

This disaster, calamity this misfortune will come with acute precision and accuracy.  It will come with perfection and exactness as described by Allah the Almighty – with strictness – attentiveness to detail, it will come with complicatedness – precision and meticulousness.

There is no doubt about it.

Adding the other synonyms to it:

To Beat, knock, punch, slap, flap- ضَرَبَ

ضَرَبَ : تَنَقَّلَ ,  أسَافَرَ , تَحَرَّكَ

To move roam, rove, wander, migrate, go from place to the other

To shell, to bombard, to cannonade  ضَرَبَ بِالقَنَابِلِ – ضَرَبَ بالمَدَافِع  -

To Blow a trumpet ضَرَبَ فِى الْبُوْقِ : نَفَخَ  –

Military attack – Air attack ضَرَبَةَ  –

آفَةَ  بَلْوَى – Plague, Affliction, Trial, Tribulation, Ordeal, Heavy Blow,

Misfortune, Calamity, Disaster, Evil.

– ضَرْبَةُ الضَّمْس Sunstroke, Insolation (Sudden prostration/collapse due to                        exposure to the sun or excessive heat), Heatstroke,

– ضَرْبَة القَاضِيَةُ Death blow, knockout, fatal blow, finishing stroke, coup de

grace.

– ضَرْبَة ُ مُعَلَّم Master stroke, coup de maitre

– قَاصِمَةُ الظّْر catastrophe

– شِدَّة : ضِيْق – عُسْرِ – عَنَّفَStrength, Power, Forcefulness, Vehemence,

Intensity, Severity, Hardness and Harshness.

شَدَّدَ : أكَّدَ عَلَى , ضَغَطَ عَلَى , قَيَّدَ  – Exert Pressure, Bear-down heavily, harass,

restrain, constrain,

– ألَحَّ – أصَرَّPersist, importune, besiege.

– قَوَّى – جَعَلَهُ أكْثَرَ حِدَّةَStrengthen, consolidate, make stronger, intensify,

aggravate, heighten, make severe, make more serious

– شَدَّدَ الحَرْفIntensify double, Geminate (Gemini-Twins, the constellations

containing two bright stars – Castor and Pollux).

Incorporating these synonyms :

Man will be bombarded and shelled.  The trumpet will be sounded and everything be subject to afflictions and trials and ordeals and misfortunes calamities and disaster.

People will suffer from sunstroke, heatstroke and insolation – they will be collapsing all-round, everything will be shattering all round.

These Disasters and Calamities will consolidate itself, it will aggravate, intensify the vehemence and intensity with such severity and harshness with the pressure heavily increasing strengthening and intensifying with such force  and severity it will indeed be the fatal blow, the coup de grace, the finishing stroke, the death blow.

It will indeed be the coup de Maitre – Master Stroke of the Almighty.

You too can try out a further combination of words and then you will realize that what you see would be far too beyond your comprehension and understanding.

Let us now, take some of the verses in Holy Quran, depicting this calamity with the words, synonyms and variations used.

74.8 فَإِذَا نُقِرَ فِي النَّاقُورِ

Finally, when the Trumpet is sounded,

74.9 فَذَلِكَ يَوْمَئِذٍ يَوْمٌ عَسِيرٌ

That will be- that Day – a Day of Distress,-

79.6 يَوْمَ تَرْجُفُ الرَّاجِفَةُ

One Day everything that can be in commotion will be in violent commotion,

79.7 تَتْبَعُهَا الرَّادِفَةُ

Followed by oft-repeated (commotions):

79.8 قُلُوبٌ يَوْمَئِذٍ وَاجِفَةٌ

Hearts that Day will be in agitation;

73.17 فَكَيْفَ تَتَّقُونَ إِنْ كَفَرْتُمْ يَوْمًا يَجْعَلُ الْوِلْدَانَ شِيبًا

Then how shall ye, if ye deny (Allah), guard yourselves against a Day that will make children hoary-headed?-

73.18 السَّمَاءُ مُنْفَطِرٌ بِهِ كَانَ وَعْدُهُ مَفْعُولا

Whereon the sky will be cleft asunder? His Promise needs must be accomplished.

73.19 إِنَّ هَذِهِ تَذْكِرَةٌ فَمَنْ شَاءَ اتَّخَذَ إِلَى رَبِّهِ سَبِيلا

Verily this is an Admonition: therefore, whoso will, let him take a (straight) path to his Lord!

69.13 فَإِذَا نُفِخَ فِي الصُّورِ نَفْخَةٌ وَاحِدَةٌ

Then, when one blast is sounded on the Trumpet,

69.14 وَحُمِلَتِ الأرْضُ وَالْجِبَالُ فَدُكَّتَا دَكَّةً وَاحِدَةً

And the earth is moved, and its mountains, and they are crushed to powder at one stroke,-

69.15 فَيَوْمَئِذٍ وَقَعَتِ الْوَاقِعَةُ

On that Day shall the (Great) Event come to pass.

69.16 وَانْشَقَّتِ السَّمَاءُ فَهِيَ يَوْمَئِذٍ وَاهِيَةٌ

And the sky will be rent asunder, for it will that Day be flimsy,

وَاه    – Frail, Fragile, Weak, Untenable, Unsound, Trivial Insignificant.

وَاهَا  – How wonderful for those in Bliss.

69.17 وَالْمَلَكُ عَلَى أَرْجَائِهَا وَيَحْمِلُ عَرْشَ رَبِّكَ فَوْقَهُمْ يَوْمَئِذٍ ثَمَانِيَةٌ

And the angels will be on its sides, and eight will, that Day, bear the Throne of thy Lord above them.

69.18 يَوْمَئِذٍ تُعْرَضُونَ لا تَخْفَى مِنْكُمْ خَافِيَةٌ

That Day shall ye be brought to Judgment: not an act of yours that ye hide will be hidden.

69.19 فَأَمَّا مَنْ أُوتِيَ كِتَابَهُ بِيَمِينِهِ فَيَقُولُ هَاؤُمُ اقْرَءُوا كِتَابِيَهْ

Then he that will be given his Record in his right hand will say: “Ah here! Read ye my Record!

69.20 إِنِّي ظَنَنْتُ أَنِّي مُلاقٍ حِسَابِيَهْ

“I did really understand that my Account would (One Day) reach me!”

69.21 فَهُوَ فِي عِيشَةٍ رَاضِيَةٍ

And he will be in a life of Bliss,

39.68 وَنُفِخَ فِي الصُّورِ فَصَعِقَ مَنْ فِي السَّمَاوَاتِ وَمَنْ فِي الأرْضِ إِلا مَنْ شَاءَ اللَّهُ ثُمَّ نُفِخَ فِيهِ أُخْرَى فَإِذَا هُمْ قِيَامٌ يَنْظُرُونَ

The Trumpet will (just) be sounded, when all that are in the heavens and on earth will swoon, except such as it will please Allah (to exempt). Then will a second one be sounded, when, behold, they will be standing and looking on!

صَعِقَ – Means : To be struck Dumb – Thunder struck, shocked stunned, stupefied, astonished amazed, flabbergasted, astounded – except those whom Allah will be pleased to exempt

77.7 إِنَّمَا تُوعَدُونَ لَوَاقِعٌ

Assuredly, what ye are promised must come to pass.

77.8 فَإِذَا النُّجُومُ طُمِسَتْ

Then when the stars become dim;

77.9 وَإِذَا السَّمَاءُ فُرِجَتْ

When the heaven is cleft asunder;

77.10 وَإِذَا الْجِبَالُ نُسِفَتْ

When the mountains are scattered (to the winds) as dust;

36.48 وَيَقُولُونَ مَتَى هَذَا الْوَعْدُ إِنْ كُنْتُمْ صَادِقِينَ

Further, they say, “When will this promise (come to pass), if what ye say is true?”

36.49 مَا يَنْظُرُونَ إِلا صَيْحَةً وَاحِدَةً تَأْخُذُهُمْ وَهُمْ يَخِصِّمُونَ

They will not (have to) wait for aught but a single Blast: it will seize them while they are yet disputing among themselves!

36.50 فَلا يَسْتَطِيعُونَ تَوْصِيَةً وَلا إِلَى أَهْلِهِمْ يَرْجِعُونَ

No (chance) will they then have, by will, to dispose (of their affairs), nor to return to their own people and families!

56.4 إِذَا رُجَّتِ الأرْضُ رَجًّا

When the earth shall be shaken to its depths,

56.5 وَبُسَّتِ الْجِبَالُ بَسًّا

And the mountains shall be crumbled to atoms,

56.6 فَكَانَتْ هَبَاءً مُنْبَثًّا

Becoming dust scattered abroad,

13.31 وَلَوْ أَنَّ قُرْآنًا سُيِّرَتْ بِهِ الْجِبَالُ أَوْ قُطِّعَتْ بِهِ الأرْضُ أَوْ كُلِّمَ بِهِ الْمَوْتَى بَلْ لِلَّهِ الأمْرُ جَمِيعًا أَفَلَمْ يَيْأَسِ الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا أَنْ لَوْ يَشَاءُ اللَّهُ لَهَدَى النَّاسَ جَمِيعًا وَلا يَزَالُ الَّذِينَ كَفَرُوا تُصِيبُهُمْ بِمَا صَنَعُوا قَارِعَةٌ أَوْ تَحُلُّ قَرِيبًا مِنْ دَارِهِمْ حَتَّى يَأْتِيَ وَعْدُ اللَّهِ إِنَّ اللَّهَ لا يُخْلِفُ الْمِيعَادَ

If there were a Qur’an with which mountains were moved, or the earth were cloven asunder, or the dead were made to speak, (this would be the one!) But, truly, the command is with Allah in all things! Do not the Believers know, that, had Allah (so) willed, He could have guided all mankind (to the right)? But the Unbelievers,- never will disaster cease to seize them for their (ill) deeds, or to settle close to their homes, until the promise of Allah come to pass, for, verily, Allah will not fail in His promise.

69.4 كَذَّبَتْ ثَمُودُ وَعَادٌ بِالْقَارِعَةِ

The Thamud and the ‘Ad People (branded) as false the Stunning Calamity!

69.5 فَأَمَّا ثَمُودُ فَأُهْلِكُوا بِالطَّاغِيَةِ

But the Thamud,- they were destroyed by a terrible Storm of thunder and lightning!

69.6 وَأَمَّا عَادٌ فَأُهْلِكُوا بِرِيحٍ صَرْصَرٍ عَاتِيَةٍ

And the ‘Ad, they were destroyed by a furious Wind, exceedingly violent;

69.7 سَخَّرَهَا عَلَيْهِمْ سَبْعَ لَيَالٍ وَثَمَانِيَةَ أَيَّامٍ حُسُومًا فَتَرَى الْقَوْمَ فِيهَا صَرْعَى كَأَنَّهُمْ أَعْجَازُ نَخْلٍ خَاوِيَةٍ

He made it rage against them seven nights and eight days in succession: so that thou couldst see the (whole) people lying prostrate in its (path), as they had been roots of hollow palm-trees tumbled down!

69.8 فَهَلْ تَرَى لَهُمْ مِنْ بَاقِيَةٍ

Then seest thou any of them left surviving?

Hadith.

Hadith No. 1.

رسولالله (ص) قَالَ « الشَّمْسُ وَالْقَمَرُ مُكَوَّرَانِ يَوْمَ الْقِيَامَةِ        »

Allah’s Apostle said: The sun and the Moon will be folded up  – rolled up into a ball.

Hadith No. 2.

حَدَّثَنَا زُهَيْرُ بْنُ حَرْبٍ حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ الرَّحْمَنِ – يَعْنِى ابْنَ مَهْدِىٍّ – حَدَّثَنَا شُعْبَةُ عَنْ عَلىِّ بْنِ الأَقْمَرِ عَنْ أَبِى الأَحْوَصِ عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ عَنِ النَّبِىِّ صلى الله عليه وسلم قَالَ « لاَ تَقُومُ السَّاعَةُ إِلاَّ عَلَى شِرَارِ النَّاسِ ».

The hour shall not accur but upon the wicked of the creation.  (The wicked, the vicious, the malicious, harmful and evil of the creation)

Hadith No 3.

حَدَّثَنِى زُهَيْرُ بْنُ حَرْبٍ حَدَّثَنَا عَفَّانُ حَدَّثَنَا حَمَّادٌ أَخْبَرَنَا ثَابِتٌ عَنْ أَنَسٍ أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صلى الله عليه وسلم قَالَ « لاَ تَقُومُ السَّاعَةُ حَتَّى لاَ يُقَالَ فِى الأَرْضِ اللَّهُ اللَّهُ »

It is narrated on the authority of Anas that verily the Messenger of Allah (may peace be upon him) observed: The Hour (Resurrection) would not come so long as Allah is supplicated in the world.

HadithNo. 4.-

حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ بْنُ حُمَيْدٍ أَخْبَرَنَا عَبْدُ الرَّزَّاقِ أَخْبَرَنَا مَعْمَرٌ عَنْ ثَابِتٍ عَنْ أَنَسٍ قَالَ

قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ (ص) « لاَ تَقُومُ السَّاعَةُ عَلَى أَحَدٍ يَقُولُ اللَّهُ اللَّهُ »

It is narrated on the authority of Anas that the Messenger of Allah (may peace be upon him) said: The Hour (Resurrection) would not come upon anyone so long as he supplicates Allah.

Hadith No. 5.

حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو كَامِلٍ الْجَحْدَرِىُّ وَأَبُو مَعْنٍ زَيْدُ بْنُ يَزِيدَ الرَّقَاشِىُّ – وَاللَّفْظُ لأَبِى مَعْنٍ – قَالاَ حَدَّثَنَا خَالِدُ بْنُ الْحَارِثِ حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ الْحَمِيدِ بْنُ جَعْفَرٍ عَنِ الأَسْوَدِ بْنِ الْعَلاَءِ عَنْ أَبِى سَلَمَةَ عَنْ عَائِشَةَ قَالَتْ سَمِعْتُ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صلى الله عليه وآله سلم يَقُولُ « لاَ يَذْهَبُ اللَّيْلُ وَالنَّهَارُ حَتَّى تُعْبَدَ اللاَّتُ وَالْعُزَّى ». فَقُلْتُ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ إِنْ كُنْتُ لأَظُنُّ حِينَ أَنْزَلَ اللَّهُ ( هُوَ الَّذِى أَرْسَلَ رَسُولَهُ بِالْهُدَى وَدِينِ الْحَقِّ لِيُظْهِرَهُ عَلَى الدِّينِ كُلِّهِ وَلَوْ كَرِهَ الْمُشْرِكُونَ ) أَنَّ ذَلِكَ تَامًّا قَالَ « إِنَّهُ سَيَكُونُ مِنْ ذَلِكَ مَا شَاءَ اللَّهُ ثُمَّ يَبْعَثُ اللَّهُ رِيحاً طَيِّبَةً فَتَوَفَّى كُلَّ مَنْ فِى قَلْبِهِ مِثْقَالُ حَبَّةِ خَرْدَلٍ مِنْ إِيمَانٍ فَيَبْقَى مَنْ لاَ خَيْرَ فِيهِ فَيَرْجِعُونَ إِلَى دِينِ آبَائِهِمْ »

‘A’isha reported: I heard Allah’s Messenger (may peace be upon him) as saying: The (system) of night and day would not end until the people have taken to the worship of Lat and ‘Uzza. I said: Allah’s Messenger, I think when Allah has revealed this verse:” He it is Who has sent His Messenger with right guidance, and true religion, so that He may cause it to prevail upon all religions, though the polytheists are averse (to it)” (ix. 33), it implies that (this promise) is going to be fulfilled. Thereupon he (Allah’s Apostle) said: It would happen as Allah would like. Then Allah would send the sweet fragrant air by which everyone who has even a mustard grain of faith in Him would die and those only would survive who would have no goodness in them. And they would revert to the religion of their forefathers.

Let us wind up with this lesson with a few thought provoking anecdotes.

IMAM GHAZZALI SAYS: THERE IS IN HADITH, THAT WISE MAN SHOULD HAVE FOUR DIVISIONS OF TIME. IN ONE DIVISION HE SHALL TAKE ACCOUNT OF HIMSELF.  ALL SAYS, O BELIEVERS, RETURN YOU ALL TO ALLAH THAT YOU MAY BE SUCCESSFUL.”

*HADHRATH UMAR USED TO BEAT HIS TWO FEET WITH STICKS AND SAY: WHAT ACTIONS HAVE YOU DONE TODAY?

** MAIMUN-N-MIHRAN SAID: NO MAN CAN BECOME GOD-FEARING TILL HE TAKES STRICT ACCOUNT OF HIMSELF MORE THAN WHAT HE TAKES FROM HIS PARTNER IN BUSINESS.

*HASAN BASRI SAID: “A BELIEVER IS A GUARD OVER HIMSELF.  HE TAKES ACCOUNT OF HIMSELF FOR ALLAH.  HE WHO TAKES ACCOUNT OF THEMSELVES IN THE WORLD, IT WILL BE EASY ON RESURRECTION DAY AND THE ACCOUNT OF THOSE WHO DO NOT TAKE ACCOUNT OF THEMSELVES, IT WILL BE DIFFICULT FOR THEM

IT HAS BEEN REPORTED THAT A MAN KEPT HIMSELF SEATED BEFORE THE FOOR OF OMAR (R). AN UNSEEN VOICE SAID, O MAN HAVE YOU TAKEN REFUGE TO OMAR AND NOT TO ALLAH.?  GO AND TURN THE QURAN AS IT WILL MAKE YOU FREE FROM WANT FROM THE DOOR OF OMAR.  THEN THE MAN DISAPPEARED FROM THAT PLACAE.  HAZRAT OMAR ALSO LOST HIM.  HE TOOK TO SILENCE AND ENGAGED HIMSELF IN DIVINE WORSHIP. ONE DAY OMAR CAME TO HIM AND SAID: I WAS EAGERLY WAITING FOR YOU WHY DID YOU NOT COME?.  THE MAN SAID: I RECITE THE QURAN AND THAT HAS MADE ME FREE FROM SEEKING ASSISTANCE FROM OMAR AND HIS FAMILY.  HAZRATH OMAR SAID: MAY ALLAH SHOWER HIS BLESSINGS ON YOU. WHAT HAVE YOU FOUND IN THE QURAN.?” HE REPLIED ” “I SAW THEREIN – THERE IS IN THE SKY YOUR PROVISION – AND WHAT HAS BEEN PROMISED TO YOU.

HAZRATH OMAR SAID: MY PROVISION IS IN THE SKY AND AND HERE I AM SEEKING IT IN THE EARTH.  SAYING THIS HE BEGAN TO WEEP AND SAID YOU HAVE SPOKEN THE TRUTH.  AFTER THAT, HAZRATH OMAR USED TO COME TO HIM AND SIT WITH HIM.

40.13 هُوَ الَّذِي يُرِيكُمْ آيَاتِهِ وَيُنَزِّلُ لَكُمْ مِنَ السَّمَاءِ رِزْقًا وَمَا يَتَذَكَّرُ إِلا مَنْ يُنِيبُ

He it is Who showeth you his Signs, and sendeth down sustenance for you from the sky: but only those receive admonition who turn (to Allah).
