In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful.
1 The calamity! The Great Disaster
2 What is the calamity? What is the Great Disaster
3 And what will make thee know how terrible is the calamity?
4 The day wherein men will be as scattered moths,
5 And the mountains will be as carded wool.
6 Then as for him whose measure (of good deeds) is heavy,
7 He will live a pleasant life.
8 And as for him whose measure (of good deeds) is light,
9 The abyss is a mother to him. (Will have his home in a bottomless pit)
10 And what will make thee know what that is?
11 A burning Fire.
My dearest Brothers, My Dearest Sisters and my Dearest Children
Last week week, by the Grace and Mercy of Allah, we were able to provide you with a word for word exegesis of the verses 8 and 9 – وَأَمَّا مَنْ خَفَّتْ مَوَازِينُهُ ¤ فَأُمُّهُ هَاوِيَةٌ ¤ -
And as for him whose measure (of good deeds) is light, The abyss is a mother to him. (Will have his home in a bottomless pit) and we will be continuing with the relevant verses with regard the words, “khaffath”, “Ummuhu” & “Hawiyah”-خَفَّتُْ – فَأُمُّهُ- هَاوِيَةٌ
We have given the relevant verses with regard to “Mawaazeen” when it appeared in the previous Aayath – Verse No.6.
7.8 The balance that day will be true (to nicety): those whose scale (of good) will be heavy, will prosper:
007.009 Those whose scale will be light, will be their souls in perdition, for that they wrongfully treated Our signs.
23.102 Then those whose balance (of good deeds) is heavy,- they will attain salvation:
23.103 But those whose balance is light, will be those who have lost their souls, in Hell will they abide.
17.110 Say: “Call upon Allah, or call upon Rahman: by whatever name ye call upon Him, (it is well): for to Him belong the Most Beautiful Names. Neither speak thy Prayer aloud, nor speak it in a low tone, but seek a middle course between.”
20.103 In whispers will they consult each other: “Yet tarried not longer than ten (Days);
68.23 So they departed, conversing in secret low tones, (saying)-
The next word –
28.7 So We sent this inspiration to the mother of Moses: “Suckle (thy child), but when thou hast fears about him, cast him into the river, but fear not nor grieve: for We shall restore him to thee, and We shall make him one of Our messengers.”
28.13 Thus did We restore him to his mother, that her eye might be comforted, that she might not grieve, and that she might know that the promise of Allah is true: but most of them do not understand.
4.11 Allah (thus) directs you as regards your Children’s (Inheritance): to the male, a portion equal to that of two females: if only daughters, two or more, their share is two-thirds of the inheritance; if only one, her share is a half. For parents, a sixth share of the inheritance to each, if the deceased left children; if no children, and the parents are the (only) heirs, the mother has a third; if the deceased Left brothers (or sisters) the mother has a sixth. (The distribution in all cases (’s) after the payment of legacies and debts. Ye know not whether your parents or your children are nearest to you in benefit. These are settled portions ordained by Allah; and Allah is All-knowing, All-wise.
5.17 In blasphemy indeed are those that say that Allah is Christ the son of Mary. Say: “Who then hath the least power against Allah, if His will were to destroy Christ the son of Mary, his mother, and all every – one that is on the earth? For to Allah belongeth the dominion of the heavens and the earth, and all that is between. He createth what He pleaseth. For Allah hath power over all things.”
5.75 Christ the son of Mary was no more than a messenger; many were the messengers that passed away before him. His mother was a woman of truth. They had both to eat their (daily) food. See how Allah doth make His signs clear to them; yet see in what ways they are deluded away from the truth!
23.50 And We made the son of Mary and his mother as a Sign: We gave them both shelter on high ground, affording rest and security and furnished with springs.
31.14 And We have enjoined on man (to be good) to his parents: in travail upon travail did his mother bear him, and in years twain was his weaning: (hear the command), “Show gratitude to Me and to thy parents: to Me is (thy final) Goal.
46.15 We have enjoined on man kindness to his parents: In pain did his mother bear him, and in pain did she give him birth. The carrying of the (child) to his weaning is (a period of) thirty months. At length, when he reaches the age of full strength and attains forty years, he says, “O my Lord! Grant me that I may be grateful for Thy favour which Thou has bestowed upon me, and upon both my parents, and that I may work righteousness such as Thou mayest approve; and be gracious to me in my issue. Truly have I turned to Thee and truly do I bow (to Thee) in Islam.”
80.35 And from his mother and his father,
4.23 Prohibited to you (For marriage) are:- Your mothers, daughters, sisters; father’s sisters, Mother’s sisters; brother’s daughters, sister’s daughters; foster-mothers (Who gave you suck), foster-sisters; your wives’ mothers; your step-daughters under your guardianship, born of your wives to whom ye have gone in,- no prohibition if ye have not gone in;- (Those who have been) wives of your sons proceeding from your loins; and two sisters in wedlock at one and the same time, except for what is past; for Allah is Oft-forgiving, Most Merciful;-
24.61 It is no fault in the blind nor in one born lame, nor in one afflicted with illness, nor in yourselves, that ye should eat in your own houses, or those of your fathers, or your mothers, or your brothers, or your sisters, or your father’s brothers or your father’s sisters, or your mother’s brothers, or your mother’s sisters, or in houses of which the keys are in your possession, or in the house of a sincere friend of yours: there is no blame on you, whether ye eat in company or separately. But if ye enter houses, salute each other – a greeting of blessing and purity as from Allah. Thus does Allah make clear the signs to you: that ye may understand.
16.78 It is He Who brought you forth from the wombs of your mothers when ye knew nothing; and He gave you hearing and sight and intelligence and affections: that ye may give thanks (to Allah).
33.4 Allah has not made for any man two hearts in his (one) body: nor has He made your wives whom ye divorce by Zihar your mothers: nor has He made your adopted sons your sons. Such is (only) your (manner of) speech by your mouths. But Allah tells (you) the Truth, and He shows the (right) Way.
39.6 He created you (all) from a single person: then created, of like nature, his mate; and he sent down for you eight head of cattle in pairs: He makes you, in the wombs of your mothers, in stages, one after another, in three veils of darkness. such is Allah, your Lord and Cherisher: to Him belongs (all) dominion. There is no god but He: then how are ye turned away (from your true Centre)?
53.32 Those who avoid great sins and shameful deeds, only (falling into) small faults,- verily thy Lord is ample in forgiveness. He knows you well when He brings you out of the earth, And when ye are hidden in your mothers’ wombs. Therefore justify not yourselves: He knows best who it is that guards against evil.
33.6 The Prophet is closer to the Believers than their own selves, and his wives are their mothers. Blood-relations among each other have closer personal ties, in the Decree of Allah. Than (the Brotherhood of) Believers and Muhajirs: nevertheless do ye what is just to your closest friends: such is the writing in the Decree (of Allah).
58.2 If any men among you divorce their wives by Zihar (calling them mothers), they cannot be their mothers: None can be their mothers except those who gave them birth. And in fact they use words (both) iniquitous and false: but truly Allah is one that blots out (sins), and forgives (again and again).
28.59 Nor was thy Lord the one to destroy a population until He had sent to its centre a messenger, rehearsing to them Our Signs; nor are We going to destroy a population except when its members practise iniquity.
Now for the final two verses :
10 And what will make you understand what that is?
11 It is A burning – raging inferno.
وَمَا أَدْرَاكَ - This was fully dealt with in the third verse – وَمَا أَدْرَاكَ مَا الْقَارِعَةُ
We will just give the meanings of أَدْرَاكَ - for purposes of clarity: The meanings are:
Perception, discernment, realization, noticing, comprehension, apprehension, recognition, understanding. Awareness -
conception, cognizance knowledge, reason, intelligence, intellect, mind, mentality, accomplishment, attainment,
apperception, introspective self-consciousness.
extrasensory perception.
If you check with verse 3 of this Surah, you will see that we have 13 verses raising the query, what is your perception, what is your realization etc., giving you the indication, that it is beyond the understanding, apprehension, comprehension, intelligence, intellect, knowledge and even extra-sensory perception of the human understanding and knowledge.
It is A burning – raging inferno
You cannot even imagine what it is like – it is beyond the conception of any reasoning of the human intellect. Or any intellect for that matter.
Appears 138 Verses of the Holy Quran – 145 Places
Then we have words describing Hell Fire as Jahannam, and Jaheem and Sa’eer
3 times
Once – 26 times in 26 verses.
16 times in 16 verses
All these mean Fire, Hell-Fire, Inferno –
Volcano
Front, Front line, Firing Line
Blaze, flame, fire, hell, inferno
- حَامِيَةRoot word is – - حَامٍMeaning:
Hot, heated, Flaming violent, vehement, fiery, Strong.
Fierce, Grim, Bitter, Intense.
So, نَارٌ حَامِيَةٌ - Means – It is A burning – raging inferno – Violent, vehement, strongly heated Hell-Fire. The Raging inferno burns Fiercely, The Blazing inferno burns with grimness and burns bitter and intense.
Now for a few of the Beautiful verses from the Noble, most exalted Holy Quran:
11.106 Those who are wretched shall be in the Fire: There will be for them therein (nothing but) the heaving of sighs and sobs:
11.113 And incline not to those who do wrong, or the Fire will seize you; and ye have no protectors other than Allah, nor shall ye be helped.
14.50 Their garments of liquid pitch, and their faces covered with Fire;
15.18 But any that gains a hearing by stealth, is pursued by a flaming fire, bright (to see).
18.53 And the Sinful shall see the fire and apprehend that they have to fall therein: no means will they find to turn away therefrom.
21.69 We said, “O Fire! be thou cool, and (a means of) safety for Abraham!”
23.104 The Fire will burn their faces, and they will therein grin, with their lips displaced.
28.41 And we made them (but) leaders inviting to the Fire; and on the Day of Judgment no help shall they find.
33.66 The Day that their faces will be turned upside down in the Fire, they will say: “Woe to us! Would that we had obeyed Allah and obeyed the Messenger!”
40.41 “And O my people! How (strange) it is for me to call you to Salvation while ye call me to the Fire!
45.33 Then will appear to them the evil (fruits) of what they did, and they will be completely encircled by that which they used to mock at!
45.34 It will also be said: “This Day We will forget you as ye forgot the meeting of this Day of yours! and your abode is the Fire, and no helpers have ye!
59.20 Not equal are the Companions of the Fire and the Companions of the Garden: it is the Companions of the Garden, that will achieve Felicity.
59.21 Had We sent down this Qur’an on a mountain, verily, thou wouldst have seen it humble itself and cleave asunder for fear of Allah. Such are the similitudes which We propound to men, that they may reflect.
66.6 O ye who believe! save yourselves and your families from a Fire whose fuel is Men and Stones, over which are (appointed) angels stern (and) severe, who flinch not (from executing) the Commands they receive from Allah, but do (precisely) what they are commanded.
17.97 It is he whom Allah guides, that is on true Guidance; but he whom He leaves astray – for such wilt thou find no protector besides Him. On the Day of Judgment We shall gather, them together, prone on their faces, blind, dumb, and deaf: their abode will be Hell: every time it shows abatement, We shall increase from them the fierceness of the Fire.
36.63 “This is the Hell of which ye were (repeatedly) warned!
26.91 “And to those straying in Evil, the Fire will be placed in full view;
037.023 “Besides Allah, and lead them to the Way to the (Fierce) Fire!
37.55 He looked down and saw him in the midst of the Fire.
82.14 And the Wicked – they will be in the Fire,
4.10 Those who unjustly eat up the property of orphans, eat up a Fire into their own bodies: They will soon be enduring a Blazing Fire!
4.55 Some of them believed, and some of them averted their faces from him: And enough is Hell for a burning fire.
22.4 About the (Evil One) it is decreed that whoever turns to him for friendship, him will he lead astray, and he will guide him to the Penalty of the Fire.
25.11 Nay they deny the hour (of the judgment to come): but We have prepared a blazing fire for such as deny the hour:
31.21 When they are told to follow the (Revelation) that Allah has sent down, they say: “Nay, we shall follow the ways that we found our fathers (following). “What! even if it is Satan beckoning them to the Penalty of the (Blazing) Fire?
33.64 Verily Allah has cursed the Unbelievers and prepared for them a Blazing Fire,-
34.12 And to Solomon (We made) the Wind (obedient): Its early morning (stride) was a month’s (journey), and its evening (stride) was a month’s (journey); and We made a Font of molten brass to flow for him; and there were Jinns that worked in front of him, by the leave of his Lord, and if any of them turned aside from our command, We made him taste of the Penalty of the Blazing Fire.
35.6 Verily Satan is an enemy to you: so treat him as an enemy. He only invites his adherents, that they may become Companions of the Blazing Fire.
42.7 Thus have We sent by inspiration to thee an Arabic Qur’an: that thou mayest warn the Mother of Cities and all around her,- and warn (them) of the Day of Assembly, of which there is no doubt: (when) some will be in the Garden, and some in the Blazing Fire.
48.13 And if any believe not in Allah and His Messenger, We have prepared, for those who reject Allah, a Blazing Fire!
67.05 And we have, (from of old), adorned the lowest heaven with Lamps, and We have made such (Lamps) (as) missiles to drive away the Evil Ones, and have prepared for them the Penalty of the Blazing Fire.
67.10 They will further say: “Had we but listened or used our intelligence, we should not (now) be among the Companions of the Blazing Fire!”
67.11 They will then confess their sins: but far will be (Forgiveness) from the Companions of the Blazing Fire!
76.4 For the Rejecters we have prepared chains, yokes, and a blazing Fire.
84.12 And he will enter a Blazing Fire.
088.004 The while they enter the Blazing Fire,-
Allah’s Apostle has said in a sermon:
“Therefore, when mischief (sedition, riot, disturbance, unrest, disorder, strife, tumult commotion turmoil, affliction, distress, ordeal charm, glamour, enchantment, fascination, captivation, bewitchment infatuation, appeal, attraction) come to confuse you like the segments of a darkened night:
Then hold fast to the quran. As it is the intercessor whose intercession shall be granted.
and a creditable advocate
And whoever, keeps it before him (as a guide) it will lead him to the garden.
And whoever keeps it behind him, it will drive him to the fire.
And it is the guide that guides to the best path
And it is a book in which there is explanation, particularization and recapitulation.
(-تَفْصِيْلُ thafseel:detail, elaboration, dividing into sections, minute exposition, detailed description, attention to particular items)
( – بَيَانbayaan:statement, announcement, communique, proclamation, report, style, diction, eloquence, rehetoric, illustrative, expository)
( – وتَحْصِيْلُ thahseel:learning, knowledge, erudition, information, letters, scholarly accomplishment, educational achievements – acquisition of knowledge
And it is a decisive (determined, resolute) world and not a jest (joke, make fun, talk lightly, trifle
And there is for it a manifest meaning and an esoteric (hidden) one
Thus its apparent meaning is firm(authoritative) and its esoteric one is knowledge.
It’s exterior is elegant and its interior is deep
It has many boundaries, and its boundaries have many boundaries.
It’s wonders shall not cease;and its unexpected marvels shall not become old (odd, queer, obsolete)
There are in it the lamps of guidance and the beacon of wisdom.
And guide to knowledge for him who knows the attributes.
Therefore, one should extend his sight;
And should let his vision reach the attribute; so that one who is in perdition may get deliverance; and one who is entangled may get free;
Because, meditation(thinking, reflecting and pondering) is the life of the heart of one who sees – As the one having a light (easily) walks in darkness;
Therefore, you must seek good, excellent, deliverance and that too with little waiting with the minimum of delay.
Hadith No. 2.
‘Ali (a.s.) said, speaking about the Holy Quran in a sermon :
“It’s one part speaks with the other, and one portion testifies about the other.”
We shall wind up with a long Khuthbah-Sermon from Hazrath ‘Ali as reported in Nahjul Balaaghah – Peak of Eloquence – Arabic Reference: Sermon 176
* عظة الناس *
“Try to be benefitted by what the Merciful Allah has taught you. take counsel of the advises bestowed by Him and have sincere faith in them..He has explained the effects of vices and virtues with the help of such clear arguments that no room is left for you to doubt them and to advance excesses to go against them.. He has most expressively and emphatically refuted every argument against piety, virtuousness and Godliness, and has told you what He likes and what He does not, so that you do good and abstain from evil.
The Holy Prophet (S) has said that “The heaven lies in the midst of duties and obligations which human beings usually find disagreeable, displeasing, hard, harsh and painful, but to reach there, one has to pass through all these; and contrarily hell is found amongst such activities which are apparently attractive, alluring, pleasing, comforting and gratifying. “
Remember that every order of Allah appears as painstaking, displeasing, disagreeable and harsh and every sin allures you in the form of your ardent desire extremely attractive and highly gratifying to mind and body.
May Allah bless the man who dispels from his mind base desires and avarice. Because human mind has the weakness of developing ardent desires, and it is this ardency which drives one towards vices and sins.
” Know, O creatures of Allah,, you must be aware that every morn and night a faithful Muslim looks at his thoughts and deeds with doubts and suspicions – of adopting vice in the garb of virtue – he blames himself for his shortcomings and forces himself to strive more and more to think and do good.
You try to follow those good people who have passed away before you. They left this world like one who is proceeding on a long journey. They passed through this life as if it was a stage on their route where their halt was to be of very short duration.
* فَضْلُ الْقُرآن *
Remember that the Holy Quran is such a Gospel that it will never deceive you, is such a guide that it will never mislead you and such a commentator, that it will never puzzle or beguile you. Whoever comes in contact with it, and has sincerity of purpose in achieving this contact, the Holy Book will not leave him without enhancing his virtues and diminishing his vices.
Know you all, that if one has studied the Holy Quran carefully he does not require any other Gospel to guide him; and without knowing the Holy Quran, no other knowledge is complete or useful. If you have lost healthy balance of mind through attachment to vices and sins then seek treatment and guidance of this Holy Book, it will cure your mind of the diseases of schism, doubt, heathenism and cruelty. Seek its help. it will teach you to face misfortunes and calamities.
Invoke the help of Allah through it, go towards Him with its love in your mind. But remember, do not make it an instrument of beggary in society, because this Gospel teaches you how to seek help of Allah and not to beg of your fellow beings.
Know that it is an interceder and its intercession will be accepted. It is a speaker who is testified. For whoever the Qur’an intercedes on the Day of Judgement, its intercession for him would be accepted. He about whom the Qur’an speaks ill on the Day of Judgement shall testify to it. On the Day of Judgement an announcer will announce, “Beware. every sower of a crop is in distress except the sowers of the Qur’an.” Therefore, you should be among the sowers of the Qur’an and its followers. Make it your guide towards Allah. Seek its advice for yourselves, do not trust your views against it. and regard your desires in the matter of the Qur’an as deceitful.
About the believers and their good deeds; and the hypocrites and their bad deeds

Action! To action! Then (look at) the end to the end, and (remain) steadfast to steadfast. Thereafter (exercise) endurance for endurance, and piety for piety. “You have an objective. Proceed towards your objective.” You have a sign. Take guidance from your sign. “Islam has an objective. Proceed towards its objective.”
Proceed towards Allah’s by fulfilling His rights which He has enjoined upon you. He has clearly stated His demands for you. I am a witness for you and shall plead excuses on your behalf on the Day of Judgement.
Beware! what had been ordained has occurred and that which had been destined has come into play (has come to pass). I am speaking to you with the promise and pleas of Allah.
Allah the Sublime, has said:
Verily, those who say: Our Lord is Allah! and persevere aright, the angels descend upon them (saying): “Fear Ye not, nor be grieved, and receive the glad tidings of the Garden (Of Bliss) which Ye were promised.” (Qur’an, 41:30)
You have said. “Our Lord is Allah.” Then keep steadfast to His Book, to the way of His command and to the virtuous course of His worship. Thereafter do not go out of it, do not introduce innovations in it, and do not turn away from it, because those who go away from this course will be cut off from (the mercy of) Allah on the Day of Judgement.
Beware from destroying your manners and changing them, maintaining one tongue. A man should control his tongue because the tongue is obstinate with its master. By Allah, I do not find that fear of Allah benefits a man who practises it unless he controls his tongue.
Certainly the tongue of a believer is at the back of his heart while the heart of a hypocrite is at the back of his tongue; because, when a believer intends to say anything, he thinks it over in his mind. If it is good he discloses it, but if it is bad he lets it remain concealed. While a hypocrite speaks whatever comes to his tongue, without knowing what is in his favour and what goes against him.
The Holy Prophet of Allah – peace and blessing of Allah be upon him and his descendants – said:
“The belief of a person cannot be firm unless his heart is firm, and his heart cannot be firm unless his tongue is firm.”
So whoever of you can manage to meet Allah, the Sublime, in such a position that his hands are unsmeared with the blood of Muslims and their property and his tongue is safe from exposing them, he should do so.
* * تَحْرْيم البدع * *
Following the sunnah and refraining from innovation
Know, O’ creatures of Allah, that a believer should regard lawful this year what he regarded lawful in the previous year, and should consider unlawful this year what he considered unlawful in the previous year. Certainly people’s innovation cannot make lawful for you what has been declared unlawful; rather, lawful is that which Allah has made lawful and unlawful is that which Allah has made unlawful. You have already tested the matters and tried them; you have been preached by those before you. Illustrations have been drawn for you and you have been called to clear fact. Only a deaf man can remain deaf to all this, and only a blind man can remain blind to all this.
He whom Allah does not allow benefit from trials and experience cannot benefit from preaching. He will be faced with losses from in front, so that he will approve what is bad and disapprove what is good.
People are of two categories – the follower of the shari`ah (religious laws), and the follower of the innovations to whom Allah has not given any testimony by way of sunnah or the light of any plea.

Guidance from the Holy Qur’an
Allah the Glorified, has not counselled anyone on the lines of this Qur’an, for it is the strong rope of Allah and His trustworthy means. It contains the blossoming of the heart and springs of knowledge. For the heart there is no other gloss than the Qur’an although those who remembered it have passed away while those who forgot or pretended to have forgotten it have remained. If you see any good give your support to it, but if you see evil evade it, because the Messenger of Allah used to say: “O’ son of Adam, do good and evade evil; by doing so you will be treading correctly.”
* انواع الظلم *
Categories of oppression
Know that injustice is of three kinds – one, the injustice that will not be forgiven, another, that will not be left unquestioned, and another that will be forgiven without being questioned. The injustice that will not be forgiven is duality of Allah. Allah has said: Verily Allah forgiveth not that (anything) be associated with Him … (Qur’an, 4:48,116).
The injustice that will be forgiven is the injustice a man does to himself by committing small sins; and the injustice that will not be left unquestioned is the injustice of men against other men. The retribution in such a case is severe. It is not wounding with knives, nor striking with whips, but it is so severe that all these things are small against it. You should therefore avoid change in the matter of Allah’s religion for your unity in respect of a right which you dislike is better than your scattering away in respect of a wrong that you like. Certainly, Allah the Glorified has not given any person, whether among the dead or among those who survive, any good from separation. (Allah has never bestowed His Bounties, in the past and will not do so now on people, if they deviate and stray from truth and religion.)
O’ people, blessed is the man whose own shortcomings keep him away from (looking into) the shortcomings of others, and also blessed is the man who is confined to his house, eats his meal, buries himself in obeying his Allah. “and weeps over his sins”, so that he is engaged in himself and people are in safety from him.
[O people! blessed is he who feels so much for his own shortcomings that he has no heart and no time to probe for the vices of others. Happy is the man who leads a retired life; is contented with what he gets; spends his time in the service of Allah and religion; is repentant over the sins and vices committed by him, and so spends his time that none is injured or harmed by him.]
We conclude the exegesis of Surah Al-Qaari’ah.
