In the Name of Allah, The Most Merciful The Most Compassionate.

Islam has laid down some universal fundamental rights for humanity as a whole, which are to be observed and respected under all circumstances. To achieve these rights Islam provides not only legal safeguards but also a very effective moral system. Thus whatever leads to the welfare of the individual or the society is morally good in Islam and whatever is injurious is morally bad. Islam attaches so much importance to the love of Allah and love of man that it warns against too much of formalism. We read in the Quran:

“It is not righteousness that you turn your faces towards East or West; but it is righteousness to believe in Allah and the Last Day and the Angels, and the Book, and the Messengers; to spend of your substance, out of love for Him, for your kin, for orphans for the needy, for the wayfarer, for those who ask; and for the freeing of captives; to be steadfast in prayers, and practice regular charity; to fulfill the contracts which you made; and to be firm and patient in pain (or suffering) and adversity and throughout all periods of panic. Such are the people of truth, the Allah-conscious.” (2:177)

We are given a beautiful description of the righteous and Allah-conscious man in these verses.

While obeying these noble regulations, man should fix his gaze on the love of Allah and the love of his fellow men.

In the Quranic verse that we quoted, We are given four heads:

1. Our faith should be true and sincere,

2. We must be prepared to show it in deeds of charity to our fellow-men,

3. We must be good citizens, supporting social organizations, and

4. Our own individual soul must be firm and unshaken in all circumstances.

This is the standard by which a particular mode of conduct is judged and classified as good or bad. This standard of judgment provides the nucleus around which the whole moral conduct should revolve. Before laying down any moral injunctions Islam seeks to firmly implant in man’s heart the conviction that his dealings are with Allah who sees him at all times and in all places; that he may hide himself from the whole world but not from Him; that he may deceive everyone but cannot deceive Allah; that he can flee from the clutches of anyone else but not from Allah.

It stipulates for man a system of life which is based on all good and is free from all evil. So it is our bounden duty not only to practice virtue, but also to establish virtue and eradicate vice, to bid good and to forbid wrong. The verdict of our conscience should prevail and virtue must not be subdued to play second fiddle to evil. Those who respond to this call are gathered together into a community and given the name “Muslim”. And the singular object underlying the formation of this community (“Ummah”) is that it should make an organized effort to establish and enforce goodness and suppress and eradicate evil.

The moral teachings of Islam cover the broad spectrum of personal moral conduct of a Muslim as well as his social responsibilities.

A person who calls himself a Muslim and who does not have good Morality and Good Character even though he may fast, pray or even considers himself a Muslim, according to Islam he is nothing but a hypocrite said our Holy Prophet Muhummed (S)

May Allah in His Mercy Protect us all from such hypocrisy.

Assalaamu Alaikum wa Rahmathullaahi Wa Barakaathuhu.

RADIO TALK 12.

In the Name of Allah, the Most Compassionate, the Merciful

It is the nature of this life that people will suffer from worries and stress, because this world is the place of disease, hardship and suffering. Hence among the things that distinguish Paradise from this world is the fact that there is no worry or stress there:

لا يَمَسُّهُمْ فِيهَا نَصَبٌ وَمَا هُمْ مِنْهَا بِمُخْرَجِينَ

15.48 “No sense of fatigue shall touch them, nor shall they (ever) be asked to leave.” [al-Hijr]

It is also the nature of this life that people have to put up with suffering and hardship for various reasons, as is indicated in the Qur’aan: “Verily, We have created man in toil.” [al-Balad 90:4]. So people feel regret for what has happened in the past, anxious about what may happen in the future, and worried about what is going on in the present.

The things that cross our minds and make us feel distressed are things in the past that have caused us grief, things in the future that we are worried about, and things in the present which concern us.

People react differently to stress and worries, depending on how many things they are concerned with, whether the worry is continuous or not, and on whether they have faith in their hearts or are rebellious and sinful.

We may describe people’s hearts as being of two types: either the heart is the throne of Allaah, filled with light, life, happiness, joy and all the treasures of goodness; or it is the throne of Shaytaan, wherein is distress, darkness, death, grief, worry and anxiety.

Worries include Kinds of anxieties that may result from committing sins, Kinds of distress that result from wrongful treatment at the hands of others it is said that “The wrong suffered at the hands of those who are closely-related is more painful to bear than a blow from a powerful sword.”

Distress suffered because of the calamities that happen in this world – chronic illnesses or serious diseases, disobedience of children towards their parents, hostility on the part of one’s wife or mistreatment on the part of one’s husband. Some kinds of anxiety result from fears about what may lie ahead in the future, AND A HOST OF OTHER WORRIES WHICH MANKIND HAS TO FACE.

When faced with distress, harm, worries and anxieties, you must try to resist them and reduce them as much as you can, and Islam expects you to react with befitting patience to the things in which you have no choice. As a result of such patience you gain countless benefits such as: resilience and toughness as is appropriate; useful experience, strong willpower, patience, the hope of reward, and many other benefits which reduce the distress felt. Thus their anxiety is replaced with joy and the hope of blessings and reward from Allaah, as the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) stated in an authentic Hadeeth:

“How marvellous is the affair of the believer! Everything that happens to him is good, and this does not apply to anyone except the believer. If something good befalls him, he gives thanks for it, and that is good for him. If something bad befalls him, he bears it with patience, and that is good for him.”

We cannot detail all of them, this is just to give an inkling for you to think reflect and ponder and seek protection from Allah against all such worries.

O Allaah, keep us safe from distress, grant us relief from depression and alleviate our worries, for You are the All-Hearing Who answers prayers, The Ever-Living, Eternal.

ASSALAAMU ALAIKUM WA RAHMATHULLAAHI WA BARAKAATHUHU.

RADIO TALK 13.

In the Name of Allah Most Merciful the Compassionate.

The Holy Quran says:

يَا أَيُّهَا الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا إِنْ جَاءَكُمْ فَاسِقٌ بِنَبَإٍ فَتَبَيَّنُوا أَنْ تُصِيبُوا قَوْمًا بِجَهَالَةٍ فَتُصْبِحُوا عَلَى مَا فَعَلْتُمْ نَادِمِينَ

49.6 – “O ye who believe! if a wicked person comes to you with any news,

Ascertain the truth, check its veracity, before you pass it on to others, lest you harm people unwittingly and afterwards become full of repentance for what ye have done.”

How many of us in our day to day affairs see and hear people giving us information.  How many of us have checked them before telling it to the other person and how many of us have just passed on the “information” to others without verifying it’s accuracy?

The result of which may have caused untold agonies to some, It may have killed a useful plan or It may have destroyed an organization or may have caused chaos in a country and a host of other mishaps and predicaments – Just because, we did not verify the accuracy or the truthfulness or the veracity of what we had received before passing it on.

The Holy Quran says:

“Do you not see how Allah sets for a parable: A Goodly word is like a Goodly tree, whose root is firmly fixed growing deep into the ground and its branches reach to the heavens.  It bring forth its fruit at all times by the leave of its Lord So Allah sets forth parables for men in order that they may receive admonition.  And

The parable of an Evil Word is like that of an evil tree, it is torn up by the root from the surface of the earth and it has no stability. Chapter 14: Verses 24 to 26

A Good word, a word of knowledge, a word of kindness, love and Mercy and a word of intelligence is like a very strong and powerful tree that produce fruits – people will definitely benefit from its fruits as well as its shade.  However much people may throw stones at it, it will not fail to produce its fruits for the benefit of all –

Similarly, if your words are pure, sincere, full of knowledge, Love, kindness and mercy – even though others may cast aspersions or even find fault with you, those goodly utterances are certainly going to produce its fruits. There are no doubts about it.

In the same way, if the words are evil – full of lies and rumours – insults and criticisms – slandering and backbiting – plotting and scheming they are certainly like the evil tree which is very unstable and whose roots are torn off the surface of the earth. They will crash down at the slightest movement of wind – the result will be losses and damages; injuries and death and can cause a host of other inconveniences, heart-breaks and chaos.  Evil words never benefit anyone hence the warning of the Holy Quran :

O You who Believe, Avoid suspicion as much as possible, for suspicion in some cases is a sin and spy not on one another and Do Not Speak ill of each other behind their backs.  Would any of you like to eat the flesh of your dead brother – No you would abhor it, you would hate it, You would detest it – Therefore, Fear Allah for Allah is Oft forgiving Most Merciful – 49:12

So the Holy Quran very specifically describes suspicion, spying, backbiting and slander as something which is despicable, hateful and an abhorrence, something so contemptible and loathsome as akin to eating the flesh of ones own dead relative.

Let us therefore, make a very strong resolve that from now on we will abstain from such evil, hateful, dreadful and vile habits.

Our Holy Prophet Muhummed (S) has said: “Words have meaning, Words have implications therefore,: “Choose your words before you utter them.” and again he said very emphatically :”Weigh your words before you choose to utter them.”

Let us ingrain these words of wisdom and words of guidance in our system and seek protection from Allah against the accursed Satan who prompt us to do such evil.

May Allah in His Mercy Guide us all along the right path –

Thought for the Day – 14

Excellent advice from the pages of the traditions of the Holy Prophet Muhummed (May Peace and Blessings on Him and His Progeny)  by M. Z. M. Nazim

In the Name of Allah the Most Compassionate the Most Merciful.

Let us start this day with some good advice given in the wonderful pages of the religion of Islam.

O people! you and all that you wish and desire of this world are like visitants with very limited time to stay. But your obligations

- both moral and religious – are like debts with a constant and pressing demand for repayment, and which you have a to pay back in a very limited span of your life; and with a set of actions which are to be taken account of.  Some of you are such that due to ignorance, you expend your lives to no purpose, while may others are over-jealous and not knowing the proper way – they either over do a thing, or do it wrongly – and thus cannot achieve what they want to.

You are born in an age when you are faced with more and more of evil, and find good receding away and away from you.  It is an age when Satan has great desire of misleading people.  His scheming manoeuvres are being pursued more and more vigorously; his cunning devices to lure you, are becoming very common and it is very easy from him now to gather victims from amongst you.

Look carefully around you and collect true information of the society. You will either find beggars who are suffering the tortures of poverty, or rich people who repay the bounties of Allah with ungratefulness and ingratitude; misers who though possessing millions yet refuse to attend to their obligations or pay their dues to Allah and man, or such arrogant and haughty persons who do not care to listen to good advices and suggestions given in Islam.

Where are your generous, merciful, noble and liberal-minded men? Where are those who have been honest in their trades and transactions? Where are the people who had made piety their aim of life? Have they not left this world, which is so mean and so full of calamities and afflictions?  What did you get of this world after them, but dregs  or refuse of men and material.  Various strata of your society are composed today of such people that is not worth-while even to speak ill of them.

Wickedness and depravity have so spread, that those who do not like them, cannot put a stop to them;  And

those who hate and abhor them cannot keep themselves away from them.  With all this viciousness and perversity do you still desire to secure a place in the realm of Allah or to be considered as His friends? What a childish whim!

Nobody can deceive God and secure a place in His Heaven through cheating and nobody can win His favour but by implicitly obeying Him.  Woe to those who advise others to be good but do not follow the advice themselves.

Woe be unto them who tell others to abstain from evil and they themselves do not abstain from it.

This is where the Holy Quran and the Teachings of our Holy Prophet Muhummed (PBUH) say: “Why do you say things which you do not mean.

Most odious it is. The worst that anyone can ever do is what he says that which he does not mean.” 61:2 & 3.

Today, over 1427 years ago was the advent of our Holy Prophet Muhummed (PBUH) who was sent by Allah as a Mercy unto the Universe – a Mercy to all Creatures, human beings, animals, insects and all other forms of creation, both seen and unseen 21:107;

and he was sent as a universal guide to mankind, says the Holy Quran in 34:28.

We have not sent thee but as a universal (Messenger) to men, giving them glad tidings, and warning them (against sin), but most men understand not.]

Let us resolve now this very second that we will abide by such august teachings and be a people who with willingly submit ourselves in totality to the will of Allah and follow the Teachings of our Holy Prophet Muhummed (PBUH) to serve mankind and bring peace and contentment.

The Holy Quran says:

3.110 كُنْتُمْ خَيْرَ أُمَّةٍ أُخْرِجَتْ لِلنَّاسِ تَأْمُرُونَ بِالْمَعْرُوفِ وَتَنْهَوْنَ عَنِ الْمُنْكَرِ وَتُؤْمِنُونَ بِاللَّهِ

“YOU ARE THE BEST OF PEOPLE EVOLVED FOR MANKIND, YOU ENJOIN WHAT IS GOOD (AND YOU YOURSELVES DO GOOD) AND YOU FORBID EVIL (AND YOU ABSTAIN FROM EVIL DOING YOURSELVES) AND YOU BELIEVE IN ALLAH.” 3:110

MAY ALLAH IN HIS MERCY GUIDE US ALL ALONG THE RIGHT PATH.

Thought for the Day – No. 15

IN THE NAME OF ALLAH THE MOST BENEFICENT THE MOST MERCIFUL!

We as Muslims sincerely believe that Islam is the greatest blessing that Allah has given mankind.  We find our hearts filled with gratitude to Him for including us in the Ummah of the Prophet Muhummed, Blessings and Peace be upon him, and bestowing upon us this unique blessing.  Allah Himself describes Islam as His most invaluable gift to His servants:

“Today I have perfected your way of life for you, and I have completed My blessings upon you, and I have willed that Islam be the Way for you” (5 : 3)

To be truly grateful for this greatest favour, you must therefore render to Allah His due. If you do not do so, you are undoubtedly an ungrateful person.  And what ingratitude can be worse than to forget what you owe to your God.

How can we, you may ask, render these dues? Since Allah has been gracious enough to include you in the Community of Prophet Muhumed (S), the best way of showing gratitude is to become totally committed followers of the Prophet.  How can we become Muslims in the true sense of the word?

What does the word Muslim which we all use so often, really mean? Can a person be a Muslim by virtue of his birth?  Is a person a Muslim simply because he is the son or grandson of a Muslim?  Is a Muslim born a Muslim just as a Brahman’s son is born a Brahman,or an Englishman’s son is born an Englishman, or a white-man’s son is born a white man, or a negro’s son is born a negro? Are Muslims a race, a nationality or a caste?  Do Muslims belong to the Muslim Ummah like Aryans belong to the Aryan race? And, just as a Japanese is a Japanese because he is born in Japan, is a Muslim similarly a Muslim by being born in a Muslim country?

Your answer to these questions will surely and definitely be:NO.

A Muslim does not become truly a Muslim simply because he is born a Muslim.  A Muslim is not a Muslim because he belongs to any particular race;

He is a Muslim because he follows Islam. Islam means peace;

Islam also means total subjugation to the will of Allah and a Muslim is a person who has attained peace by subjugation in totality to the Will of Allah.

If he renounces Islam, he ceases to be a Muslim.  Any person, whether a Brahman or an Englishman or a Japanese, a white or a black, will, on accepting Islam, become a full member of the Muslim community; while a person born in a Muslim home may be expelled from the Muslim community if he gives up following Islam, even though he may be a descendant of the Prophet, or an Arab.  Such will surely be your answer to my question.  This establishes that the greatest gift of Allah which you enjoy – that of being a Muslim -is not something automatically inherited from your parents, which remains yours for life by right irrespective of your attitudes and behaviour.  It is a gift which you must continually strive to deserve if you want to retain it; if you are indifferent to it, it may be taken away from you, God forbid.

You agree that we become Muslims only by accepting Islam.  But what does acceptance of Islam mean?  Does it mean that whoever makes a verbal profession – “I am a Muslim” or “I have accepted Islam” – becomes a true Muslim? or does it mean that, just as a Brahman worshipper may recite a few words of Sanskrit without understanding them, a man who utters some Arabic phrases without knowing their meaning becomes a  Muslim? What reply will you give to this question?  You cannot but answer that accepting Islam means that Muslims should consciously and deliberately accept what has been taught by the Prophet Muhummed (S) and act accordingly.  People who do not so behave are not Muslims in the true sense.  Islam therefore, consists, firstly, of knowledge and, secondly, of putting that knowledge into practice. A man can be white and have no knowledge; because he is born white he will remain so.  Similarly, an Englishman will remain an Englishman though he may have no knowledge, because he has been born an Englishman.  But no man becomes truly a Muslim without knowing the meaning of Islam, because he becomes a Muslim not through birth but through knowledge.  Unless you come to know the basic and necessary teachings of the Prophet Muhummed (S), how can you believe in him, have faith in him, and how can you act according to what he taught? And if you do not have faith in him, knowingly and consciously, as fully as you can; how can you become true Muslims?  It is very clear that it is impossible to be come a Muslim and remain a Muslim in a state of ignorance. Being born in Muslim homes, bearing Muslim names, dressing like Muslims and calling yourselves Muslims is not enough to make you Muslims; true Muslims know what Islam stands for and believe in.

Listen carefully, dear listeners, to the point I am making.   It is essential to understand that to remain in possession of, or to be deprived of, the greatest gift of Allah – for which you are so overwhelmed with gratitude – depends primarily on knowledge. Without knowledge, you cannot truly receive His gift of Islam. If your knowledge, is so little that  you receive only a small portion of it, then you will constantly run the risk of losing even that part of the magnificent gift which you have received, unless you remain vigilant in your fight against ignorance.

A person who is totally unaware of the difference between Islam and Kufr – is the difference between submission and rejection of Allah’s guidance and being in a state of ingratitude- and the incongruity between Islam and Associating partners to Allah is like someone walking along a track in complete darkness.  Most likely his steps will wander aside or on to another path without him being aware of what is happening.

Your greatest danger lies in your ignorance of Islamic teachings and in your unawareness of what the Holy Quran teaches and what guidance has been given by the Prophet (S).  But if you are blessed with the light of knowledge you will be able to see plainly the clear path of Islam at every step of your lives.  You will also be able to identify and avoid the false paths of Kufr (Unbelief) Shirk (attributing partners to Allah) and immorality which may cross it.  And, whenever a false guide meets you on the way, a few words with him will quickly establish that he is not a guide who should be followed.

Dear listeners, on this knowledge, whose absolute necessity I stress once again, depends whether you and your children are true Muslims and remain true Muslims.  Most of your time and labour is spent on things which sustain your physical existence in life. I am not asking you to become scholars, read voluminous books or spend a large part of your lives in the pursuit of knowledge.

It is not necessary to study so extensively to become a Muslim. I only want each one of you to spend about one hour of the twenty-four hours of the day and night in acquiring the knowledge of his Deen, the way of life, ISLAM.  Every one of you, young or old, man or woman, should at least acquire sufficient knowledge to enable him to understand the essence of the teachings of the Holy Quran and the purpose for which it has been sent down.  You should also be able to understand clearly the mission which the Prophet, (S) came into this world to fulfil.  You should also recognize the corrupt order and system which he came to destroy.  You should acquaint yourselves, too, with the way of life which Allah has ordained for Muslims.

Every Muslim believes and is under the impression that Muslims are different from Kafirs; that Allah likes Muslims (the Believers) and dislikes the Kafirs (the Unbelievers); that Muslims will find God’s forgiveness, while Kafirs will not ; that Muslims will go to Paradise and Kafirs to Hell.  I want you to consider why there should be so much difference between Muslims and Kafirs.

Kafirs (Unbelievers) are as much offspring of Adam and Eve as you.  They are human beings like yourselves.  They possess hands, feet, eyes and ears.  They breathe the same air as you, drink the same water and inhabit the same land.  The Allah who created you also created them.  So why should they be ranked lower and you higher? Why should you go to Heaven and why should they be cast into Hell?  Consider carefully.  Such vital difference between man and man cannot be simply due to the fact that you have names like Abdullah and Abdur Rahman and they have names like, Fernando, Perera, Smith and Kanda; or that you are circumcised and they are not, or that you eat meat and they avoid it, or that they eat pork and you do not.

Allah who has created all human beings and who is the Sustainer of all, cannot be so unjust as to decide on such petty grounds which of His creatures to send to heaven and which to Hell.

Now dear listeners, in all fairness, tell me : If you call yourselves Muslims but in fact are as ignorant and disobedient as a Kafir, can you in reality be superior to the latter merely on the strength of bearing different names, wearing different clothes and eating diffrent foods. Can you on this basis be entitled to the blessings of Allah in this world and in the Hereafter?

Islam is not a race or family in which membership is automatically passed on from father to son.  A so called High-caste priest’s son will not command respect in the eyes of Allah if he does wrong deeds, just because he is born into a priestly home; nor will He look down on the son of a so-called low caste family, disregarding his good deeds, simply because of his birth.

Understand dear listeners that whatever differences there are in the sight of Allah between man and man depend entirely on the state of their knowledge and actions.  Those who do not do good deeds, whether their names are Abdullah or Abdur Rahman, Perera or Kandasamy; Smith or whatever are identical in the sight of Allah.  They are unworthy of His blessings.

My dearest brothers and sisters, you call yourselves Muslims and you believe that Allah showers His Blessings on Muslims.  But open your eyes and see if those blessings are in fact descending on you?  You cannot know what will happen to you in the Hereafter until after your physical death, but you can most certainly look around you and see your condition here on earth.  There are so many hundreds of millions of you in the world that if each of you were to throw a single pebble they would make a mountain.  But even though there are so many Muslims and Muslim governments, the world is in the hands of those who rebelled against Allah.  Your necks are in their grip, to be turned to whichever side they like; your heads, which should not bow before anybody except Allah are now bowed before human beings.  Your honour, which no one dared to touch, is now being trampled upon. Your hands which were once held high, are now lowered and stretched out before your enemies.  Ignorance, dependence, poverty and indebtedness have subjected you to ignominy everywhere. Is this the blessing of Allah? If it is not – but rather a sign of anger.

Then how strange it is that it is Muslims on whom it is descending!  You are Muslims and yet are wallowing in ignominy; You are Muslims and yet are slaves; This situation is impossible as it is for an object to be white and black at the same time.  If Muslims are the loved ones of Allah how can they be treated disgracefully?  Is your Allah (God forbid) so unjust that while you, for your part, acknowledge His duties and obey His orders -He allows the disobedient to rule over you, and punishes you for your obedience to Him?  If it is an article of faith with you That Allah is not unjust and obedience to Allah can never result in disgrace, then you will have to concede that there is something wrong in your claim to be Muslims.  Although you may be registered as Muslims on your birth certificates, Allah does not base his judgements on what is written on pieces of paper. Allah prepares his own list of obedient and disobedient servants, and it is in this list that you must search to find your true position.

We know that the Holy Quran is the Book of Allah, while Kafirs do not, yet we treat is as a Kafir treats it.  And this makes us all the more deserving of punishment.  We know that Muhummed(S) is the Prophet Allah and yet we are as unwilling as a Kafir to follow him.  We know that God has cursed liars, has positively declared Hell as the abode of all who give and take bribes, has denounced those who borrow and lend at interest as the worst of sinners has; condemned slander as being as bad as eating a brother’s flesh; and has warned that obscene behaviour, pornography and debauchery will meet with the severest punishment.  Yet despite knowing all this we freely indulge in all these vices, as if we had absolutely no fear of Allah’s displeasure.  This is why we are not rewarded:  we are Muslims in appearance only.  The fact that those who do not accept God’s sovereignty rule over us and subject us to ignominy on every possible occasion shows that we are being punished for ignoring Islam – Allah’s greatest gift to us.

Dearest Brothers and Sisters, nothing I have said to day is intended as blame.  I have not come to censure.  May aim is to kindle the desire in you to recover the treasure that has been lost.  Such a desire arises when a man realizes exactly what he has lost and how valuable it was.  I have spoken sharp and pungent words only to awaken you and compel you to think.

May Allah in His infinite Mercy guide us all along the right path.

ASSALAAMU ALAIKUM WA RAHMATHULLAAHI WA BARAKAATHUHU!
